Most embarrassing moments

25 July 2012, 07:17
Many of us may end up in a situation totally unpredicted and unthinkable. And while the consequences are unheard of and no pillow available to hide those smarting red cheeks what is ones recourse?

I will attempt to relate my most embarrassing moments and not a snigger will be tolerated. Or else what,

One sunny Saturday morning my wife and I decided to visit the local library. An advert in the local paper mentioned that redundant books will be given away. Ok with me ‘cos I am book mad.  These books were neatly packed in categories on a huge table.  There were many people wandering around looking for a coup -de- gras. Much was in German and ancient. We went through the books several times and eventually found what we were looking for. The friendly German ladies smiled benign upon us. We were after all, cleaning up their back garden. The books we selected was carted off and stored in the Kombi.

We returned to the building and entered one of the open doors where people were pushing and shoving to get in. It was a classy artistic exhibition with hundreds of paintings and engravings and other artefacts on display.  The portraits and  pictures against the wall must have been legion, stretching all the way around the room.

The wife and I started to admire the works : She moved anti-clockwise around the room and I the other way.  The going was slow due to the masses of people. And one was bumped and biffed and stoically acknowledged the German apologies. Eventually there was the coming together when I and wife was reconciled. I fondly put my arm around her and gave her a hug. No reaction.

I stared at the pictures and moved on. My wife appeared in front of me livid. It takes a few moments to realise something is seriously amiss.  I checked out this pseudo-wife to find it is a complete stranger. The two ladies glared at each other then hell broke loose with the laughter. It took me several years to live down the embarrassment

Why I love Cambodia’s capital

There are so many reasons to hate Cambodia’s bite sized capital of Phnom Penh. Open sewers, naked children, piles of burning garbage on every street. Its a dirty, smelly, noisy amalgam. But Phnom Penh grows on you and by the time you leave it will occupy a special place in your heart. Read more...
