Movie review: Maleficent

30 May 2014, 11:17

Robert Stromberg

Angelina Jolie, Elle Fanning, Sharlto Copley

I was lucky enough to win tickets to the pre-screening at Clearwater Mall last night. Thank you M-net Movies!

In a word, "Maleficent" is magical, with Angelina Jolie hypnotic as the betrayed fairy from whose perspective this re-imagining of the Sleeping Beauty story is told. She is absolutely mesmerising and has never looked more stunning – big eyes, ruby lips, porcelain skin and sculpted cheekbones – her face simply glowing and glowering from a range of emotions to match the fairy tale’s narrative. Without her this movie simply couldn't....wouldn't work.

The rest of the cast includes home-boy Sharlto Copley with an inexplicable Scottish accent although he is very effective in his role. The gorgeous Sam Riley has fun with his shape-shifting part and Imelda Staunton, Leslie Mann and Juno Temple provide some light humour while the luminous Elle Fanning is perfect as the princess Aurora.

First-time director Robert Stromberg's visual flair ensures a surreally ravishing spectacle and the special effects are superb. The fairy-land and all it's creatures will leave you utterly enchanted.
