Gaming awards 2012
I play a fair amount of games. If I didn't have a full time job I would most probably play even more games. I am not a fanboy of a specific platform but I mainly play games on PC, PS3 and occasionally on my IPAD2.
I have made a list of my own (mostly irrelevant ) nominations for games that I played during 2012. This is a combination of all 3 platforms as well as brand new titles and some older releases that I was catching up with. So without further adieu:
Best game for that 10 hour flight:
I played a number of good games on my IPAD this year. Some that I could say as being pretty good includes: Jetpack Joyride, World of Goo, Temple Run, Tower Defence HD, Bridge Constructor. In the end there was only one game that ruled them all:
Kingdom Rush (IPAD)
Anyone that has ever played any game on the IPAD should play this. This is at it's core a tower defence game but simple additions make it much more than that. Upgradeable heroes, villagers that fight by your side, placement of knights and paladins to guard certain areas makes this truly a great game.
The artistic nature of the character and tower design, makes this game a pleasure to play. The small details on every tower is brilliant. 10/10 for keeping you occupied.
Best way to lose half your life game
There was only one game that managed to get me engaged for more than 10 hours. I spent a lot of time on Mass Effect 3, Skyrim but in the end I could only point to one game:
Kingdoms of Amalur - The Reckoning (PC)
I tried to think why this game was so good. Anything in KOA could be found in Skyrim and other dungeon crawlers. The art direction has been seen before, the monsters are scarier somewhere else, the characters are mundane and you find your normal and generic, elves, trolls etc.etc. The main thing about KOA that kept me coming back was the combat. The fighting was absolutely brilliantly done. When I played like warrior, I felt I was a tank that could steam-roll anything in my path, when I played as an assassin the melee and combat was fast and furious. The different weapons felt smooth, perfectly balanced and at no one point would I prefer one over the other as a whole - Feablades for the assassin, heavy sword for the warrior and my trusty staff for the sorcerer.
I ended up getting the two expansion packs as well. The Legend of dead Kel was a let down though.
Multiplayer of the year award
I am sure that there are many out there that can be called the best. Unfortunately TELKOM has taken this choice away from me. ADSL promised in start of 2012, end of 2012 still none.
TELKOM 2012 - Who cares
Best multiplayer of the year because I feel like, should I find someone responsible for this, I should frag his ____ to kingdom come!
Most disappointing game
I always look forward to new games. I often buy games when they are just released and I am willing to pay that premium on price to feed my hunger for quality. During the year I bought a couple of new games but there is only one that was a real let-down!
Formula 1 - 2012 (PS3)
There probably are many people that will argue with me. The reasons why this is the "most disappointing" of the year is that I had high hopes that it will be a true driving simulator. The car models are as good as ever, the game modes are expanded on but there is one glaring problem with the game. IT IS BUGGY!
More than once has is started to rain and I could no longer keep my car on the road and had to pit for Inter's or Wets. What does the AI do, keep on slicks and race past me at a million miles an hour. If I have spent time learning the track, picking up my breaking points, I would expect that a race will not be influenced by a very half baked weather driving dynamic. At one stage I got so fed up that I tried to crash the car and write it off. Even this was very hard to do!
Sleeper award of the year
Often a game just does something that makes you sit back and review why you play games and creates a new limit.
Spec Ops - The line (PS3)
There is not much that will differentiate it from your normal shooter. Ok, it is a 3rd person shooter very much in the mould of Drake and his cronies from Uncharted. Pretty boy Drake wishes he could shoot like the guys in Spec Ops!
What SOTL does is not pit you against enemies alone, it also pit's you against your moral fibre on why the hell are you doing this - kind of way. I was pleasantly surprised when I played this this, hence it being called my sleeper of the year and not the best game of the year.
Best game of the year
This was tough as I had to compare games across different platforms that meant different things to me. Kingdom rush meant I could enjoy my intercontinental flights, KOA made me enjoy my evenings stuck in a Hotel. In the end there can be only one.
Mass Effect 3 - (PS3)
I thoroughly enjoyed ME3. I have played the previous titles but there was something about this instalment that made the hard slog worthwhile. The reasons, I enjoyed it so much was that I actually enjoyed the narrative. The story was as good as it gets and someone from Assassins Creed could learn from that. Less sometimes is more. There was a lot of "more" as well but the main premise was still a simple story. "Get enough angry people to kill the big angry guy". The combat was good maybe too easy at times. My Game of the year!
There are a couple of games that I am looking forward to play in the coming months and as such they are not included in my list as yet. They include:
Borderlands 2, Resident Evil 6, Call of Duty -Black Ops2, Assassins Creed .
