“What is life? It is the flash of a firefly in the night. It is the breath of a buffalo in the wintertime. It is the little shadow which runs across the grass and loses itself in the sunset.” – Eagle Chief, Letakos-Lesa
We travel a very fine line when trying to define life and nonlife. On the one hand, the creature in question always resembles particular characteristics that Humans enjoy and on the other, the organism displays next to none. We are the yard stick by which everything is to be measured and because we are, we tend to imagine ourselves as separate or special from the rest of the animal kingdom. In reality there is no such divide and the word “life” is probably meaningless altogether, but it does show us that as animals we perform certain functions in exactly the same manner as everything else. Eat this, or that? Fight, or flight? Do it, or don’t? Expend energy, or save it? We are simple little machines that gain answers through the elimination of all other alternatives, accurately mimicking all flora and fauna in their decision-making methods of ticking off choices. What we classify as the subconscious is what all of life possess, it performs instinctual processes and tasks, calculating them without awareness of doing so: simple reactions to opposing reactions. Mankind’s unusual ability to compute a vast array of complex calculations facilitated the rise of an observer or consciousness within the mind; someone or something that can poke and prod the very workings of it all: we react but because we can think we can also choose to act.
“Through our eyes, the Universe is perceiving itself. Through our ears, the Universe is listening to its cosmic harmonies. We are the witnesses through which the Universe becomes conscious of its glory, of its magnificence.” – Alan Wilson Watts
Everything came from the nothingness of space and paradoxical that same nothingness also contains all of existence within it. No energy can be created or destroyed. Every Sun, every black hole, every man, woman and child, consists of nothing and everything at the very same time. The actuality you are aware of right now is such an eventful occurrence that it is truly a shame we only have six senses to experience it all with; hearing, smell, touch, taste, vision and thought, effortlessly painting as accurate a picture as humanly possible to create the illusion that is reality. Ever thought about how your intestines convert food into energy, how your heart keeps beating without actively thinking it or how that person’s name that you forgot earlier just pops into your head? There is more going on behind the curtain of sentience than there is in front of it, like a play on a stage the real work is done by the entire cast rather than only the actors. Just as you remain unconscious of the various goings-on within the body, so it is my belief that you are oblivious to your ability to shine the stars that dot the night sky, orbit the moon around the planet or grow the trees that feed the world. I believe your subconscious is universal; it is literally the whole entire Cosmos and you currently only experience a single part of it through the means of consciousness. Behind the lenses of your eyes, the Universe is gasping in awe at what it can alert its senses to, struggling to realise how wonderfully rare and awesome it is to be the thinking product of the very fabric of space and time. Your fellow Man may seem to contradict this with our meagre differences and complex mannerisms, but we are simply an extension of the person that you are, it is you interacting with yourself through multidimensional points of view. When I celebrate your good fortune, I celebrate my own, when I speak bad of you, I voice only my own shortcomings and when I choose aggression over understanding and love, in the end I hurt only myself. What amazes me most is that I find everything to be so breathtakingly beautiful, utterly fascinating and so wonderfully alluring; I can’t help but wonder if Narcissus wasn’t possibly onto something?
“The only reason for time is so that everything doesn’t happen at once.” – Albert Einstein
Over time this planet birthed life, spreading its branches far and wide, meteorites, ice ages or storms cut off the unlucky twigs while naturally selected shoots beat the odds and flourished into blossoming greeneries. We are one of those flowers, but more importantly we are the entire tree as well; you are the bloom, leaf, branch, trunk and root system concurrently. We feed from the same well, contribute through the same set of veins and share the same light source. The part can only comprehend the whole if it doesn’t imagine itself isolated, separate or different from it. We are the total experience, all of it; I am you and everything else instantaneously. There is no “reconnection”, threat of hellfire or exclusive states of consciousness needed to understand the relationship between all of existence and the personality you possess, to put it plainly: you are the entire connection and the subsequent animated practise thereof. This particular event we are conscious of is merely the recognition of the various processes that developed, which in time became the very experience of experience itself. With the help of technology we have exploded in our pursuit of discovering each other, our planet and the Cosmos. It has literally transformed into a feeding frenzy for the Universe’s senses, all of it trying to acquire a certain understanding about how this all works and how marvellously strange everything seems. Everyday is a new learning curve and the more I discover, the more I understand that I am merely taking note of both the wonderful and horrific things I did, still do and will do into the ever present future. Knowing I do it all to myself however, I think I want to start doing more of the amazing and less of the horrifying; hopefully my other facets of differing perceptions join me in my quest to try and understand true empathy.
“The mere adding of years to life is not living.” – Phillip Hoffman
When you wake from a dreamful slumber you return to a point of awareness; you inhabit a momentary view into this world, of this single reality. When we once again fall asleep at the end of a wakeful cycle our observer travels to every other node of experience and engorges itself until it is filled. Dreams are our gateway into the entire multitude of all experience, for we are all one; mankind, the animal kingdom, plants, the blue planet, Mother Nature and the Universe. You are everything that has ever existed and will ever exist throughout all of time and space. We were never born and we do not die, we merely shift between indifferent states of being. Sometimes we are aware of it, sometimes we dream about it and sometimes we don’t even know the difference; if any at all.
