My dad's Comrades Marathon drama

20 May 2014, 10:26
My dad has run the Comrades a ridiculous number of times, having completed 15 Marathons. This year should have been his 16th, and I'm hoping it will still be, if the powers-that-be in charge of the race can help him out.

My dad registered dutifully almost as soon registrations opened last year, he paid his fees, ran all of his qualifying races in great time and has been going above and beyond with his training.

Only, a few weeks ago, he realised he hadn't been contacted for his qualifying times and started to worry. He called, and was informed that he wasn't registered as they hadn't received his payment. My dad backtracked to see why not and he discovered that the fraudulent transaction in Denmark that he reported to his bank was in fact his registration fee. The transaction didn't have any reference to Comrades, his bank didn't know what it was for and the registrations staff didn't inform him that he hadn't paid.

And now, according to them, it's far too late to enter him or substitute him into the race as all the deadlines have passed. He has several fellow runners who have entered and paid but aren't running, offering him their spots and payments yet the powers-that-be won't assist him. They won't make an exception for a fellow Comrade in need.

If any other runner happens to read this, you will understand his situation. You will know how disappointing it is to train and be in the best shape of your life and not be able to participate. You will know how important this race is. If you can help, or want to, let me know.

He is fighting for his race, he's sent all this information to them, and if there is anyone with a heart who has the influence to make an exception, I hope they will. My dad deserves to run.

Many conclude that Yemen is yet another step towards the cataclysmic sectarian war and , quite possibly, the trigger that leads the region to this ultimate battle. I, for one, can find no reason not to hold a similar position. Read more...
