South Africa has very intelligent and strong minded individuals, we are very opinionated and we stick to what we believe in. It is very amazing that most of the time our opinions do not matter to people that are supposed to matter to and funny enough we do not care, as long as we said what we wanted to say. As an intelligent and bright nation, we are also still a much divided group. Our worlds collide and they do not come as one, we are like oil and water in most cases.
You do not need to conduct an expensive and time consuming research to prove that, all you need to do is to randomly read through News24 comments; they are heart throat, edgy and show a very much divided country. A simple article about grapes and apples awakes something about race, an article about breastfeeding, sports or whatever it may be always go back to race, blacks vs whites. I’m not trying to awaken any skeletons here, go to any comments of any articles; you are guaranteed a comment that goes back to race.
In one of my recent articles voicing out my observations about certain issues, one of the readers referred to me as “one of their own”, even today at this very hour I am still trying to process what that meant. My point is we are a very diverse country, as our dreaming politicians will say, a rainbow nation. Talking about the rainbow, one of my dear friends ones said, why are we referring to our country as a rainbow nation because we do not have the color black in our rainbow? I looked at him and said but then again we do not have the color white, are we really defined by color? Are we really that much of an angry nation. I’m always crucified for saying this but I did not grow up in the apartheid era, the stories I know are what my elders told me and I cannot live and decide on how I treat people based on the past.
No one can emphasize on unity more than it already has been emphasized on, it is up to individuals to decide on how they will treat and see each other. I thought I was the only one who felt like News24 reader’s comments are always based on race, until I saw one of our Dj’s tweets saying he is done with reading news24 comments because they are racist, whether by a black or white or green or purple reader, they are very racist. I have to say I agree with him, most of the time there is no objectivity and do not get me wrong, not everyone post racist comments but most comments are. My plea is let us as intelligent and bright readers, comment to articles according to merit and the story on hand. We do not need all this hate rubbing off to our innocent kids. I am so not going to say “Let us unite”, it had been said enough, and it is up to every one of us.
