My fellow South Africans, you need to now wake up and smell the roses.
Democracy and economic freedom - and with it economic well-being, growth, sustainability and prosperity for all - will not come from your burning and looting of property belonging to others and thereafter retreating to your shacks, watching the soapies and then doing the same thing again tomorrow.
If you are going to survive in this modern world you need to have fewer children, you need to better educate those that you do have, even if it means taking 2 jobs to do so, and you need to work harder than ever before.
If you don’t want to work that hard then keep it in your pants and accept that you are always going to be poor and living in that shack!
Those who have littered, burnt and pillaged in my home town this week, ostensibly because the much talked-about new university will not be built there - or because they are just unhappy about so many things that nobody can really do anything about - have done nobody, not least themselves, any favours whatsoever. They have acted like spoilt brats, and ignorant savages, and have gained nothing from it.
They have attacked the very shop owners who supply them with the goods they need, they have basically shot themselves in their own feet. This is not smart, this is stupid – extremely stupid when you look at the state of the economy, not just ours but the global one.
The world economy is in dire straits and companies large and small are going the mechanical and automative routes to reduce costs – costs directly attributable to wages – your wages.
Companies no longer want to be held captive by workers demands in exchange for no productivity. Believe it.
Have fewer children – and fewer wives and girlfriends - work harder, be willing to accept a day’s wages for a day’s honest effort and use the democratic means available to you to complain about corruption, ineptitude and unfairness by all means but to simply burn and loot is not the answer, it never will be.
If you wish to be treated as equals and as my fellow inhabitants in this country then understand that you too must be willing to uphold the principles I have worked my entire life to uphold. If you wish not to do so then do not be alarmed, or angry, when I refuse to assist you in any way. That is my culture.
