My local Police Station

27 February 2014, 12:37

Since a formal complaint will be lodged (although I'm honestly not holding my breath for an actual response) I will not name the police station in this article.

A few days before Christmas, my partner and I returned home only to find a group of men armed with sjamboks, knives and stones trying their very best to murder a few other people. I have no idea what started the fight but soon realised that things were getting out of control when a guy in a bakkie kept trying to run the group over.

After having the phone put down on us six times, we were eventually able to speak to an officer to report the incident. To our surprise, not a single police vehicle was dispatched. Instead, the private (unarmed) security company from one of the surrounding complexes managed to disperse the crowd.

Not so long ago, while driving down Beyer’s Naude, a taxi driver deliberately attempted to knock a cyclist off his bike - the cyclist was well clear of traffic, cycling on the edge of the road in the yellow lane, (and believe me, I am the first person to point out the shortcomings of cyclists using the roads) but since taxi drivers are under the impression that that lane was created just for them, apparently this meant that the cyclist had no right to be there and the taxi driver had every right to cause damage to this person. Thankfully the cyclist was able to pull himself off the road before the taxi driver got his way. But what flabbergasted me even more was the fact that directly behind the taxi driver, police from the **** Police Station where doing their utmost best to pretend that absolutely NOTHING was happening!

Yesterday afternoon, while driving home, I witnessed a fully marked police vehicle (Reg BSP 400 B) decide to use the yellow lane to move through traffic (at this point it must be noted that this vehicle was NOT responding, but instead returning to the police station). When confronted by another driver about their seemingly blasé attitude towards the road laws this particular police officer did nothing but scream and shout and threaten.

The police vehicle then proceeded to block an intersection while he attempted to turn right from a straight only lane. Almost causing a huge accident (because obviously, the amount of time he has to waste in traffic is far more significant than the rest of us road users!!!!). By this time, he’d put his flashing blue lights on. However, again, returning to the police station never has and never will be a reason to “respond”.

Seriously, there is enough lawlessness on the roads as it is, do we really need to have this kind of behaviour validated by the very people who are responsible for maintaining and upholding the law?

How are we EVER going to win when this is the kind of example constantly being set by law enforcement?

And the most important question of all, what the Frack is my tax money being wasted on? We very definitely ARE NOT getting the service we are supposed to be getting from SAPS.

I hate having to bring stuff like this up because somewhere among the men in blue are a few individuals who are good at their jobs, who take their positions seriously and who go out of their way to be of a service to the public because they want to. But they are fast being outnumbered by those who couldn’t give a toss!

I honestly hope I don’t ever need the police in a hurry for either myself or my family, because so far experience has shown that I will not get any of their help. That the officers at **** Police Station would rather break the laws themselves, than actually do their jobs.

I couldn't think of a sadder situation!
