Arguments between theists and atheists have run rampant the past few months. I’m not an atheist yet, but have serious issues with God, religion and the followers of religion – and this includes all religions, whether you are a Christian, a Jew, a Muslim, a Hindu or even pray to the sun.
1. ALL THE NUTS IN THE MIX:
In every religious belief there are these nuts. Those who are willing to murder innocent babies to enforce their belief. Those who think they’ll convert others to their belief system if they run around with bombs strapped to themselves and blowing busloads of school children to smithereens. Those who would start a holy war because some unbeliever dared to draw a cartoon of their Most Revered Fuzzy Wuzzy, but have no problem insulting another belief systems Most Revered Fuzzy Wuzzy. They seem to disregard one of their one rules to love one another and to forgive, only when it suits them. Let me explain Johnny Appleseed gets caught with his pants down, some sort of drug still around his nostrils, with an under aged prostitute on the bed, covered in sushi, booze and drugs. But because he is not a member of some religious system, he gets condemned to hell and back and back again to hell, and this damnation includes, his mother, father, siblings and any children he has or might have… BUT, as soon as he appears tearful in public, blaming the devil and embracing some or the other Most Revered Fuzzy Wuzzy, he gets the Most Holy Pardon of them all, but only by the member of his religious belief, the others still wish on him and any part of his family, whether alive, dead or still to be born, to burn in the eternal pits of fiery hell. Then most astonishing of all, these groups of nuts all have the gall to blame the other for all problems on the planet.
2. NO ACCOUNTABILITY OR RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR ACTIONS:
It seems that these followers all have a free pass to do whatever they please. If they sin in some way or the other, they have no need to take responsibility for their actions. It was not their fault that they slept with their neighbours wife, the devil made them do it or some hare-brained excuse or the other. It’s not their fault they blew up a school bus loaded with some kiddies, no the devil made them do it, the fact that the kids in the bus did not support their Fuzzy Wuzzy is excuse enough. According to these people you are allowed to murder somebody just because they don’t follow your brand of lunacy. It is not your fault that you robbed the bank, because (you guessed it) the devil made me do it. If nothing is your fault, but the fault of the devil or the fault of some other religious group, then why do you believe you must repent for anything, since nothing is your fault?
3. FREE WILL:
I had a conversation with a co-worker the other day and we talked about religion and the fact that I’m having trouble believing in God, because of the fact of so many children getting raped (remember God promised that no hair on a child’s body will be harmed) and murder and all the other evils and wrongs in society. She then bravely offered the Free Will song and dance. Okay, so maybe there is free will allowing us to murder and steal and such. BUT, what free will did the child have when he/she was raped? What did they do to affront God so that He would allow a child to be raped? Maybe you could use this excuse with an adult, but this doesn’t fly with me. Maybe if you yourself a rapist or murderer, then I would say, go ahead rape away on that piece of scum.
Like I said I’m not an atheist yet, but have trouble believing in God. Let’s say that He does exist – what has He ever done for me to make my life better? Don’t even try “but He gave you life” He also gave life to every other person on this planet, whether they believe in Him or not. Another one that gets me, “He blesses you each and every day” – if my life is His brand of blessing, then it’s hardly a surprise that I’m sceptic about Him and his love. I try to be a good person, a treat everybody around me the way I want them to treat me, I don’t steal, I don’t murder, I try not to lie, but sometimes one must lie a bit to spare the feelings of another. And yet, nothing I’ve ever asked, begged and pleaded for, was granted. No, I only lose even more. So, looking at my life, I have come to the following two conclusions:
1) He does exist, but could not be bothered about us. He’s just like an absent father, he made us, but then abandoned us to our lots in life, one with a sadistic streak a mile wide, cackling like a loon at all our misfortunes and pain (oh, sorry our Free Will)
2) He does not exist, and following God (any form of Him) is utter lunacy.
I know that some hard-line theist will answer with the holy fire of righteousness condemning me to hell, but that is not really the answer to convince me or anybody else of his love eternal. Or maybe you’ll offer to pray for me, okay, pray away, but then ask (demand/plead/beg) for your god to prove himself to me for a change and really change my life for the better, not some vague reference to all the “blessings” I “enjoy” in life. So to all you theists out there, from the more rational to the rabid, foam at the mouth, bible thumpers I challenge you, because I’m tired of his brand of blessing bestowed upon me – beg, plead or pray of your god to prove himself to me, to really change my life for the better, I think he can start with a windfall of at least a cool million rand to make my life a bit easier. So pray away and I give you and your Fuzzy Wuzzy one week, starting today. And if you’re praying/begging/grovelling proves true and he does prove himself to me, I’ll be the first to start screaming his love eternal and the joy of following him from all the roof tops. The ball is in your court now.
