After creating heaven and earth and while completing earth by the 7th day, we read about two mysterious trees in the middle of the garden of Eden.
Gen. 2: 9 † “ And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.”
What were they? Have you ever heard of a tree that can give life? We know fruits from fruit trees can prolong life, but here was One who could give life. Have you ever heard of a tree that possesses both good and evil knowledge? Here was one to whom Adam and Eve could go to and find ideas both good and evil or a mixture thereof. What or who were these trees?
“ Revelation 2:7, "... To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the Tree Of Life, Which is in the midst of the paradise of God."
This is the future reward to all overcomers of all ages. When the last call to battle has been sounded, when our armour has been laid down, then we will rest in the paradise of God and our portion shall be the Tree of Life, forever. "The Tree Of Life." Isn't that a beautiful figure of speech? It is mentioned three times in the Book of Genesis and three times in the Book of Revelation. In all six places it is the same tree and symbolizes exactly the same thing.
But what is the Tree Of Life? Well, first of all we would have to know what the tree itself stands for. In Numbers 24:6, as Balaam described Israel, he said they were "trees of lign aloes which the Lord hath planted." Trees throughout the Scriptures refer to persons, as in Psalms 1. Thus the Tree Of Life must be the Person of Life, and that is Jesus.
Now in the Garden of Eden there were two trees standing in the midst of it. One was the Tree Of Life, the other was the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. Man was to live by the Tree Of Life; but he was not to touch the other tree or he would die. But man did partake of the other tree, and when he did, death entered into him by his sin, and he became separated from God.
Now that Tree back there in Eden, that Tree which was the source of life, was Jesus. In John, chapters six through eight, Jesus sets Himself forth as the source of eternal life. He called Himself the Bread from heaven. He spoke of giving Himself and that if a man ate of Him he would never die. He proclaimed that He knew Abraham, and that before Abraham, He WAS.
He prophesied that He Himself would give them living waters that if man drank he would never thirst again, but would live eternally. He showed Himself as the GREAT I AM. He is the Bread Of Life, the Well Of Life, the Eternal One, the TREE OF LIFE. He was back there in Eden in the midst of the garden even as He will be in the midst of the paradise of God.
Some have an idea that the two trees in the garden were just two more trees like unto the rest of those that God had placed there. But careful students know that this is not so. When John the Baptist cried that the axe was laid to the root of all trees, he was not talking of simply natural trees, but of spiritual principles.” Taken from [ An exposition of the 7 church ages. Remember the Book of Daniel chapter 4? There Nebuchadnezzar was compared to a tree under whose shadow or reign many was. But he as that tree became lifted up and God had to cut him down for a while. So Scripture in numerous places symbolizes trees with man or angelic beings.
“ Now in I John 5:11 it says, "And this is the RECORD, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in His Son." Jesus said in John 5:40, "And ye will not come to Me, that ye might have life." Thus the record, God's Word, states plainly and clearly that LIFE, ETERNAL LIFE, is in the Son. It is no other place. I John 5:12, "He that hath the Son hath LIFE; and he that hath not the Son of God hath NOT Life."
Now since the record cannot change, be taken from or added thereunto, then the record stands that THE LIFE IS IN THE SON... Since this is so, THE TREE IN THE GARDEN HAS TO BE JESUS. All right. If the Tree Of Life is a person, then the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil is a person ALSO. It can't be otherwise. Thus the Righteous One and the Wicked One stood side by side there in the midst of the Garden of Eden. Ezekiel 28:13a "Thou (Satan) hast been in Eden, the garden of God." God planted all sorts of fruit trees in Eden’s garden to feed man’s body, but then He also planted trees that could feed man’s soul. We are physical beings who need to eat natural food to maintain our natural bodies, but we are also spiritual beings who needs to feed our minds. No matter who you are, you need to eat [take in] knowledge, put in into your mind, keep it there like food, practice and live on the power of it, just like you do food.
From the time that we are babies, we are taught to take in what our parents, school teachers, and others in society teach us. That participation in knowledge or eating of it, will determine our behaviour, our knowledge of the world around us, and our ability to survive in it.
For spiritual guidance of that kind, God planted in Eden HIMSELF as the Tree of Life. Jesus is God who later became human. Thus God had a specific place there where Adam and Eve could go to talk to Him and ask questions about their surroundings. They could walk over to see Him anytime of the day, until the fall. Although they were created adults, they still needed a lot of guidance in their new world, and for that God was there.
For man shall not live from bread alone, but from every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God. From Him comes good knowledge-truth that will never pass away. Heaven and earth may pass away, but not His truth, and the Christian feeds on that.
Just as we need to feed knowledge of right and wrong , knowledge of life, knowledge of a trade, from our parents and the rest of society to survive, so Adam needed it, and God was there to provide it. But also in the middle of the garden was another tree-another man, another tutor. One who was alongside God when all creation took place. He knew how every good thing was created, thus he also knew how it could be broken down.
One who was once a right hand man to God. One who chose to do the opposite of good [evil] and who became opposition to God by practicing it. God created good life, he saw it, knew all about it and could murder it. Murder is simply the knowledge of how to extinguish life. That is evil-the opposite or perversion of good.
Satan was well practiced in it until he lost his place in heaven and became unwelcome there. That tree by the 7th day was now planted in Eden. And he was now trying to be the center of the attraction in middle of Eden. It was election time for human beings. Who was going to be their most popular leader? God or Satan?
When man chose to partook of the knowledge of evil, whose fruits are the fruits of the flesh as found in the Book of Galatians 5, he made his choice, a choice we still have to make everyday. What shall it be today? Whereto will the knowledge of the mind lead today? Good, evil, or a mixture? On what has the mind fed most? Let the mind which was also in Christ Jesus, be in you.
