A new dam is to be constructed on the Xura River to address the “inadequate” supply of water to Lusikisiki and 23 rural villages, Water Affairs Minister Edna Molewa has told the National Assembly.
The dam, together with the development of groundwater and the upgrading and expansion of the regional bulk water system to augment the existing supply area, will result in the Lusikisiki Regional Water Supply Scheme being expanded to supply a further six villages.
Delivering her budget speech, Molewa said the estimated cost of the dam was R320 million.
The Minister also announced that the detailed feasibility planning was underway for the proposed Foxwood Dam at Adelaide.
The Minister said that the dam site on the Koonap River running through Adelaide would supply the town through a bulk distribution pipeline to the existing off-channel storage dam.
She said that a number of possible schemes had been identified “based on the development of various combinations of dams along the river”.
The most cost-effective scheme, she said, was a dam at the Foxwood site close to Adelaide.
With regard to the Umzimvubu hydro-electric and irrigation scheme, the Minister said her department was playing a pivotal role in concluding the feasibility studies for the project.
