The election of new leaders is a stark reminder of how unrepresentative of individual consciousness (and conscience) the appointment of such people truly can be. The representative of the Church whose entry into a position of disproportionate power is being celebrated right now is a true exemplar. We have here an individual who has been chosen by a tiny group of other males in secretive circumstances and the masses weep in ecstasy as if in a hynotically induced euphoric trance out of which they will not awaken. The women will follow the rules that are reinforced regulating their reproduction and the old norms will be perpetuated without question. Hints of past scandal will be quelled and the machine will continue to function.
Will the wine turn to vinegar or mellow in time? All of the attractive labels in the world can be attached to the packaging, but the truth will be determined by the taste. Who will dare be Caesar's official taster? Most will be content to have the pre-packaged morsels handed out to dissolve under their tongues.
Gestures of reconciliation and overtures to those who have previously been persectued by this organization will be publicly acknowledged, but will the conservative policies that will be perpetuated be opposed by any valiant princes who are now being handed out holy crumbs?
