Nightmare at Cape Town International

29 May 2014, 15:41
My family and I were at Cape Town International Airport last night to drop my dad off for his flight to Johannesburg. We decided to have dinner before he left and sat down to eat at the Spur.
After we placed our orders, my dad and my brother left the table to go to the check-in counters downstairs. A few moments after they left the restaurant, I heard a few loud gun shots go off in the direction they were walking in, proceeded by people screaming and running in my direction. My initial thought, was that my brother and my dad were heading in the direction of where the shots were fired and I immediately feared the worst. A few moments later I saw them emerge out of the crowd and I felt a major sense of relief, but still shocked at what I was witnessing, It seemed like a nightmare and everyone around me was in complete and utter shock.
I went to my dad, who was standing just outside the Spur, to find out what had happened and he told me that a man had just shot his wife, who is a sushi chef at the Ocean Basket. From where I was standing I could see a man lying on his back in the distance (this man later turned out to be the shooter). My brother, my dad and I then took a walk to where this incident had happened and they showed me where they were when this all happened (less than 10m away). They told me they saw people slowly moving away from the Ocean Basket saying that a man is threatening his wife. Only when the man drew his firearm did everyone start screaming and running away.
When we got closer I saw the man lying on his back and a lady lying on her back outside the entrance of the restaurant, bleeding profusely but still alive and being attended to. There was a crowd of people gathered around the scene, some taking pictures on their phones, myself included, until the police arrived and began to clear the area.
I spoke to a few people who were closer to the action and they told me that this man threatened his wife before pulling out his firearm. He apparently shot the manager of the Ocean Basket in the leg, another staff member in the lower back, his wife in the chest and then shot himself in the head.
I feel extremely sorry for all the people that were exposed to this incident and can only imagine how the must be feeling, considering my nerves are shot and I wasn't even eating at the Ocean Basket. The scary part for me is that my Family and I considered eating there but decided against it.
My condolences go out to all those that were affected by this tragedy and I really hope that this type of public display is prevented in the future. I believe that the shooter was an off-duty Police Constable, which is even more unsettling.

Why I love Cambodia’s capital

There are so many reasons to hate Cambodia’s bite sized capital of Phnom Penh. Open sewers, naked children, piles of burning garbage on every street. Its a dirty, smelly, noisy amalgam. But Phnom Penh grows on you and by the time you leave it will occupy a special place in your heart. Read more...
