Having been an avid reader of these News24 blogs, and as of recently, regarding the debacle around Nkandla, I finally decided it was time that I threw my hat into the ring and write a piece that will hopefully get readers asking the questions that no-one else seems to be asking.
I know being in Africa, we do things differently from the rest of the world, but if our culture is meant to be one of Democracy, surely we should be following the example of those that came before us?
As a taxpayer it infuriates me to no end how MY (and YOUR) hard earned money is being spent just to appease one individual. Referring to my previous comment regarding democracy, if we were to take the obvious example of the USA into account, the state PROVIDES a homestead for the residing President in the form of the White House, as for example do the British provide 10 Downing Street for the Prime Minister. This residence does not belong to any one individual but rather to the State and in turn to ALL the taxpayers of the country. If at any point it is necessary to upgrade the residence provided to the president, it is done so with accountability and with tax money.
Why then, is it that I, and YOU, as taxpayer are asked to fork out a perverse R250M in tax to pay for something only a SINGLE, greedy individual will ever benefit from? Keep in mind that this is JZ's private residence, the largest of all the ones he has, and as such he was clever enough to have these upgrades done to this particular property, thereby ensuring that he gets the maximum amount for it as if one day he is to sell the gargantuan monstrosity, all the money will land up in his back pocket. As this property belongs to him and him alone, no other president will be able to make use of it. Where now, is the logic in South African Tax payer handing over their hard earned money to JZ just so that he can live a life of opulence while the masses live in squatter camps and shacks?
