No dirt in our drinking water

23 July 2014, 12:20
Having fresh clean water is one of our most important resources and when our water access is limited, it is a detriment to us all.   We rely on public water systems to clean and distribute billions of water to our residences, businesses and schools.

It is most important for our public water to be treated to remove harmful bacteria, chemicals, dirt and other contaminents.  We all use this clean water for bathing, drinking , cooking, etc.    In addition, many gallons of water is bottled up and distributed throughout our region.

Access to sanitized clean water is obviously of vital importance.  But can we trust municipal leaders and the national water affairs department to properly regulate and monitor this very important interest?  Recently, residents of Boitumelong township drank contaminated tap water that resulted in 3 deaths.   This horrible incident can be and should be avoided with proper regulation, oversite and processes.

As residents, there are other options we can implement in our homes such as personal filtration systems or inline filters. Reusing your own water bottles save money and help the environment. Using personalized water labels to uniquely identify your bottles and make it easy to fill it up with purified water for quick access on-the-go.

We should all be aware of the importance of this resource and how we can preserve it for further safe use.   Updating infrastructure, solving administrative problems and proper oversite are key first steps.
