Like thousands of poor pensioners in South Africa I rely on the Waya Waya telephone system. Yesterday morning I put R100 in and the telephone kept telling me I had no money in and I needed to put some in. I could not fathom out why.
Eventually after much ado I managed to get hold of some in Telkom who was able to log my fault for me. A Technician came to the flat and fiddled with my phone and asked if I'd put money in. I showed him I'd put money in yesterday. He looked at me and asked if I know that there was no more Waya Waya telephone system in place. He said the telephones were now classified as pre-paid and we have to put R100 in our phones over and above the usual amount we put in to cover the cost of the rental of R100 per month thas it required.
Are we pre-paid telephone owners so non-descript that Telkom didn't think it was import to put ads on the television, in the newspapers or in our post boxes? I am quite sure these phones bring in more money than the account phones so I feel pretty disgused at having to go through so much trouble to find out that the service had been changed and that there was nothing wrong with my line.
I am doubly miffed with Telkom because those of us who are disabled reply on our telephones regardless of how insignificant we are to them.
This country has no regard for its citizen... it is a case of changing the rules and too bad if no one can 'suck these new rules out of the air.'
I look forward to good competition... one day!
