So Mac dutifully expresses outrage etc. on behalf of his paycheck at this, the latest case of a national disgrace. Thanks for the effort Jacob, but it means little coming from you. Weren’t you the one that were acquitted from rape after submitting that a girl was dressed provocatively (in a wraparound kanga) and that it is against your “culture” to leave a woman unsatisfied? Yes. Yes it was. Granted you didn’t have the luxury of a speechwriter so you had to rely on your own, um… wit, but perhaps it’s better that we know exactly where you stand. It seems that, in a country with the highest reported incidence of rape in the world, where current estimates are that even so, only 1 in 9 cases are actually reported; in a country where 1 in 4 men admit to (or brag about) rape, and half of those admit to raping more than once; in a country where many of those who do rape see absolutely nothing wrong with it; in a country where rape victims are routinely raped by the police they report the rape to; in a country where the first rape centre was established as late as the 1980’s (Western Cape), you suggest that your “culture” gives you some kind of right to a woman’s body.
At the very least this is irresponsible and grossly insensitive. At worst, in making this statement, you are directly responsible for the fear and pain of a great number of subsequent rape victims. Don’t mistake an outdated and warped belief as culture. It’s quite the opposite.
