Noah and the Flood – a delusional fairy tale
One of the Bible’s greatest Achilles heels is the story of the Noah’s ark, and the flood. Following the never ending claims over integrity of the Bible as the infallible (and especially literal) “Word of God” and how it should be “interpreted” with opinions ranging from those attempting to use it as a literal source to “qualify“ scientific facts and evidence, to those who view it as a metaphorical and figurative document, the story of Noah, his ark and the flood continue to raise controversy. It is time to put Noah to bed. And with Noah the delusion of “literal truth” regarding the rest of the myths in the Bible.
The worldwide flood.
There was never a time in history when all of earth’s landmass was covered by water. Earth is a closed system, which would also prevent any water from escaping earth’s atmosphere. Which voids any argument that there was more water during the past on earth than there is now. There simply is not enough water on earth to have covered the entire landmass since the formation of the atmosphere, which would have had to exist (assuming that Noah and his animals had to breathe and eat).
Therefore in order to have covered the entire landmass, the entire landmass would have had had to be lower. Much lower. Which in turn implies that the entire crust of the earth would have had to reside at a lower level. A level deep enough to reside under the sea everywhere. This implies that the radius of the entire crust would have had to have been smaller than it is now. Which is impossible as earth is a filled sphere with a volume which is constant. The outer crust was the first to cool and harden which is incapable of contracting into a sphere with a smaller radius. It is also supported that if the radius was smaller (and hence under water) there would have been no landmass for any animal life to develop in the first place.
We know that the crust consists of plates, and that the movement of those plates cause the plates to tilt. However there is no evidence to suggest that the entire crust of the earth was ever below sea level. Ever. And most definitely not at the time of the flood which according to young earth creationists occurred within the last 6000 years. Therefore there is absolutely no evidence to support the claim that a global flood ever occurred. In fact all the evidence suggests that a global flood was and is impossible.
I have not even bothered to check the size of the ark as quoted in the Bible. I do know however, that they did not build super tankers (to put it mildly) in those days. And to build a boat from timber, with the structural strength to survive a worldwide storm of the magnitude claimed in the Bible, would have been severely limiting to the size of any wooden ship.
Let’s turn to the passengers. Science estimates the total number of species on earth to range from between 10 million to 100 million species. Let’s settle on the minimum of 10 million species. But we also know that the likelihood of a species consisting of a single breeding pair surviving to the present day, and being representative enough to be included in the 10 million is virtually negligible. Why? Because with only a male and a female representing a species, a hungry lion or leopard would wipe the impala species with a single meal. The kudu species for the next meal. The blue wildebeest for the next. Etc…
But let’s be insanely generous and raise that likelihood of survival to 10%. This would raise the number of species needed to be represented on Noah’s tanker by a factor of 10 (a 100 million species) which would be required to guarantee survival of 10 million species to the present day. This in itself sinks the entire delusion regarding the flood. Multiplying this by 2 for a breeding pair brings us to 200 million earthlings requiring accommodation on Noah’s tanker.
A large rugby stadium accommodates approximately 80,000 people. Therefore to accommodate 200 million people would require approximately 2500 rugby fields. However, not all earthlings are people sized. There are many more tiny ones than big ones. Let’s assume we could tightly package them in boxes on top of one another, and let’s thumb suck the average size of earthlings to be 0.1% of an average human size (giving us an average weight of 70 grams (0.1% of 70kg). This would reduce the required accommodation to 0.1% of the estimated 2,500 stadiums giving us 2.5 rugby stadiums. The size is contrived, but nevertheless gives a feeling for the scale of the required operation to have been viable. There is absolutely no mention of viruses and bacteria or how they were handled, so the question has to be asked if they were brought on board too, or had to survive by being excellent swimmers.
Lastly at the end of the flood God is claimed to have planted the rainbow, as a sign that the earth never would be drowned by a flood ever again.
However, considering what we know about the nature of water, vapour and sunlight, it is safe to say that it is virtually impossible to have water and/or water vapour exposed to sunlight without the sunlight diffracting into the familiar colour spectrum of the rainbow. Therefore the rainbow is a natural phenomenon. Diffraction is an inherent and natural product of the properties of vapour and sunlight, and the two could never have co-existed without forming a rainbow. Therefore the claim regarding the rainbow is an obvious fairy tale. Nothing more than an attempt to explain the origin of the rainbow by a primitive people.
The entire story of the Noah and the flood is a fairytale. There never was a world wide flood. Every shred of evidence militates against it. It is a fallacy.
The ark’s size would not allow it to handle a miniscule fraction of the species required to ensure the diversity of life on earth which we have today, even with a 100% survival rate. Let alone manage the problems regarding food, drinking water and sewage disposal. And where did the manpower to handle this supersized zoo come from? Did this come from Noah and his little family? How many hands would it take to feed and water 200 million animals on a daily basis? And where did it come from? Where was it stored?
The survival rate of a single breeding pair of each species could never have resulted in the diversity of species on earth today. Not even a millionth of it. The idea is so ludicrous that it really does not bear mentioning.
The rainbow has and will be there for as long as we have water and sunlight on earth. The tale regarding its origin is an obvious fabrication.
So looking at the evidence it is obvious that the story of Noah’s ark is pure fabrication. Many less literal followers claim that these that the Bible should be read in the context and limited knowledge of the time. It makes some sense. However this pales into insignificance if you consider that the Bible is claimed to been written under the guidance and inspiration of the God, or the Holy Spirit. Surely they should have known better than to inspire such utter nonsense? Demanding blind allegiance to a document as obviously flawed as it is about Noah and the flood, it is obvious that the fundamental and literal interpretation of this myth can only be classed as delusional. And by extension voiding any claim of integrity related to any other story in the Bible. It proves that it is a book written by man for man.
