I just read a piece on this site, about multi-racial children. It was, admittedly, a very positive piece, but it got me thinking about a few terms that should really be obsolete in the new millennium.
Multiracial children is one of them. I have a nephew who is 'multi-racial' but when I think of him, I don't think of him that way. He's a child. A little boy. Prone to getting into trouble, and a dirt magnet, like all other little boys. His ethnicity doesn't matter to him, so why should it matter to me?
Then there's gay marriage. The question here, is exactly HOW does 'gay' marriage differ from the regular flavour? Two people love each other, they (hopefully) make each other happy, they share a bed, a home, interests and 2.3 pets. So what if they happen to have the same 'bits.' They're married. Get over the gay bit.
Finally, and this one has been getting on my last nerve for a long, long time: working woman.
Now excuse me for not seeing it, but how is being a housewife and a mother EASIER than 'bringing home the bacon?' I've never done the housewife thing (paying your own way makes that a teeny bit tricky) but I've seen it in action. There is no down time. There are no lunch breaks. You don't get leave. How is that not work?
Feel free to disagree on any of these observations, but isn't it about time we stopped using this sort of outdated language to describe the world?
