“It’s Monday, yay” said nobody ever. Well, let me be the first then. I love Mondays. Waking up with the relief that I don’t have to focus on any social pressures, that the kids will be off to school in a few hours (minutes if we’re late) and that I can get back to my work without it sounding like a rude excuse to escape the company for some.
The reason most hate Mondays though, is that this would mean them returning to that chaotic desk they left on Friday after deciding that they no longer could give a….damn. That moment of hopelessness you got before the weekend that made your brain decide that it was a problem for next week, returns just as sudden as an infection after not completing your antibiotic course and you’re immediately in that dreaded Blue Monday mood.
Long term solutions might include organizing your desk before you leave on Friday so it doesn't become the proverbial mountain you have to dig through on Monday but in this fast paced life, we all know that you’re really looking for quick fixes to get your ass through the whole of tomorrow. Here are some of my tried and tested favorites.
Start the day with a hot under the covers “exercise” session
Sex is our bodies’ built in antidepressant and anti-inflammatory trigger. Good sex that is as the secret lies in the orgasm. The orgasmic feeling you get is thanks to a chemical called serotonin being released in your brain which is kind of like a concentrated Prozac. During a morning session, you can add Immunoglobulin A to the list of good chemicals released into body. IgA is antibody that protects against infection thus boosting your immune system even before you get out of bed.
If parenthood is not on the cards for you yet, just take extra precaution as men’s sperm count are at their highest and most fertile early in the morning.
For those flying solo, refer to the Devinyls classic and use your imagination. *wink-wink
Swop the coffee for an apple
Just to start off. You can get back to your cup as soon as you’re settled into your day and be able to enjoy your coffee the way it should be, as part of a break.
Apples contain, among other healthy vitamins and minerals, fructose and carbohydrates which gives you a longer lasting and more powerful energy boost than coffee. Plus, it’s a breakfast on the run (if your “workout” session earlier took a little longer than expected)
Wearing a red top or a red pair of pants makes you seem determined and serious. If you need to make a presentation or reach a productivity goal or whatever, people will take more notice of you in this color. The secret lies in that our brain becomes more alert when we see the color red as it usually precedes danger. More alert brains means an audience hanging on your lips, it being your boss or a potential customer.
Do it subtly! You might be tempted going full out from red hat to red shoes but too much will sent warning signs to those around you that you are aggressive and might explode at any second. This will make them avoid you altogether and start water tower jokes as a defense mechanism.
Take a 5 minute time-out
Things might have been going great up until this point but everybody knows, that sometimes, just after lunch, something happens that ruins the whole day. Give yourself a 5 minute time-out as soon as the situation seems to go out of your control and take this time to find a reasonable solution.
If you’re on the phone with a difficult client, tell him politely that you would like to look into his problem and call him back in ten minutes. Don’t just say this to get him off your back. Take a few minutes to think about what he said and what you said and then calmly formulate a reply before actually calling back and resuming the conversation, with at least one party a lot calmer now than before.
End the day with a cheese sandwich
You are tempted to end a great day on a high note now by probably having a celebratory glass of wine with a greasy pasta dinner. By all means do, but why not set the ground for another great day tomorrow? Before going to bed, have a cup of sweetened rooibos and a cheese sandwich instead.
Cheese contain tyramine which triggers the release of adrenaline in the brain. While your body switches off for the night, making sure you get your much needed sleep, the tyramine will keep your brain alert enough to prevent that slow start up you experience once the alarm goes off the next morning.
Be warned though, that this is not a healthy tip to incorporate in your everyday night routine. A buildup of tyramine can cause an increase in blood pressure which can cause headaches, heart problems and increases the chance of stroke in the long run. If you’re suffering from hypertension and depression avoid this tip altogether, avoid all caffeine 3 hours before bed and settle for just the rooibos instead.
With no harm in trying, just using one of these tips will guarantee you a much better Monday than usual. Go out and enjoy it!
