On a Wing and a Prayer

19 June 2013, 07:26
The other day I read a rather trivial piece wherein the author ventured that even the insignificant stirring of a butterfly's wings, have some effect on the universe. This set me to thinking, a lot...

If this were true, and it is, come to think about it, how do my actions as a human influence the outcome of it all. Quite a lot, it would seem.

Let's take my voluptuous secretary, for example. How would my decision to dally with her, or not, have an effect on my influence on the universe? If found out, divorce and a broken home would surely follow, as night does day. My children would suffer (I expect) and as a consequence their outlook on life would change. Surely this will have an effect on how my grandchildren will experience their upbringing...and their children .. and their children...the dominoes keep on falling.

Let us now consider my dilemma. If I were a sinful man, I'd go right ahead and diddle Miss Boobies, not so? But say I were the religious type and prayed for guidance before launching myself at Curvaceous Catrina and I received the guidance that told me to refrain and I listened.

Imagine how vast a difference there would be in the two potential scenarios, hinged on just one instance of 'divine interference' in my life.

Previously,in response to another article on News 24, a commentator calculated the number of prayers which a deity would have to respond to per hour, minute and second to cater to the believers in that particular religion. It ran into kazillions.
Now imagine how the fate of mankind would be juggled about if every prayer heard, or not, had just a tiny effect on the way the world is turning. A pinball machine with a zillion steel balls running amok on steroids, huh?

Consider the other side of prayer, where the supplicant requests something for personal gain. Remember, everything belongs to somebody already. If I were to pray for that coveted job, and I got it, because my prayer was heard, someone else who also wanted that job, is going to lose out. I'll get richer while the other guy, perhaps jobless, stay poor. The ramifications are endless.

Considering the above, it would seem quite impossible for any deity, who created the universe according to a master plan, to listen to and grant even a single, simple, insignificant little prayer without jamming a monkey wrench into his perfect machine, wouldn't it?

What an astonishing story to tell, as that no normal person would in his right mind have that kind of cash lying around in the house, or even not depositing it into a Bank where it would be earning some kind or return on it. Read more...

Morality without God

I find many religious folk asking Atheists how can they possibly be moral without some sort of divine scripture dictating so or without a God figure threatening damnation to keep you in line. Read more...
