On logic, reason and religion

21 April 2013, 15:07
I feel compelled to clarify something. Logic is a type of reasoning, dealing with the contents and forms of thinking. While reason is argumentation, judgment, inference, and so on. So a reason can be logical or illogical. reason can also make sense and yet it is not the truth or fact.

There are also different logic's such as unification logic, formal logic, Hegelian logic, Marxist(dialectical) logic, symbolic logic, and transcendental logic. So when one say you are illogical what do they mean? Which logical method have they used to arrive at that logical conclusion. Religion's dogmas may be illogical but that does not mean that they are false.

People use reason(e.g sense) to counter religion specifically on doctrines, and generally as a movement. They however, do so, usually as a misstep. By that I mean they use science which is highly developed, due to humanities interest on practical life, and science offers that platform because it deals with humans external or physical concerns. Forgetting that humanity with exception of the few throughout history have taken less interest in religious life because it is dealing with intangible causal world and spiritual need, which don't immediately translate to bread and butter interests. As a result the spirituality of mankind has not rapidly developed, particularly in parallel to science.

As a result many positions or views does not make sense to scientific mind. Explanations of reality by religion tend to conflict with scientific explanations. Hence others boldly state that religion is illogical and science is logical, neglecting the fact that logic is in fact a primary field of philosophy.

Exposition of Divine Principle state " religion is a method of searching for spiritual knowledge to overcome spiritual ignorance with spiritual truth". I therefore, contend that all religions have logic and illogical elements when examined from all kinds of logical methods mentioned above. Since religion usually focus on the question why; we can surmise that religion deals with purpose, reason, and motivation of and about life.

Therefore, we can comprehend religion as a field of spiritual reasoning as much as we regard science as a field of material reasoning. Since religion deals with spiritual interest of humanity and science deals with material interest of humanity, we should logical reason that they are correlatives concerning humans existence, relations, and development. This reasoning on religion is logical: religion should offer spiritual reasoning to science, and science should offer material reasoning to religion.
