Since Valentine’s Day the whole world was thrown under a hailstorm of news that covers the Oscar saga. Every angle has been used to inform the public about the intricacies of the case not even mentioning the jokes.
This article is definitely not aimed at the sensationalist that is looking through every newspaper to get more details about Oscar.
While all eyes have been focused on the Oscar, or should I rather say Reeva case, a two year old girl got raped. A family friend apparently took her from her home and raped her in the bushes and left her there to die. In the same time frame another farm owner has been killed in Sasolburg. The domestic worker found the couple’s body in the garage and the house ransacked.
Who spoke out for these victims? Were they forgotten before even hitting the news? Why should the Oscar and Reeva case take first place in a newspaper or even a news bulletin?
Whether Oscar meant to kill Reeva, no one will ever know the truth. Why should we care about the way he’s court proceedings are going? Is it because he is a high-profile celebrity in our society? Well in that case I am ashamed that we are setting a precedent that low social status victims do not get the same publicity that others receive.
The same goes for Lance Armstrong and his story. Society just cannot get enough of hearing how he took performance enhancing drugs. Who cares? I think we should rather use the media and our brain power to give the victims a voice that has none. Let us talk about ways to improve our communities rather than focusing on people that does not add any value to it.
If I have to say one last thing to Oscar it will be: Any publicity is good publicity.
Or is it?
