Oscar: the worst fear

12 April 2014, 17:25
I can imagine nothing so terrible as to be telling the truth and no-one is listening. Everyone thinks they know Oscar because he is a celebrity, but truth be told - we don’t know him.

We don’t know his character - we haven’t met him - we cannot even see him in the witness box. Most people rely on headlines as the gospel and having watched the trial every minute of it I can honestly say that what the press reports on is misleading. “

Reeva was 'pleading' to Pistorius through locked door: Nel” the headlines scream - no, this is what Gerrie Nel says what happened, not what actually happened.

People rely on headlines and posters to determine Oscar’s guilt without looking at the context in which this was said. “Oscar is the devil” screams Reeva’s mother - no doubt for a tidy sum of money. The press thrive on sensationalism.

It is shocking how we can pull apart the character of a man that has really achieved so much against so many odds. He was born without legs and survived that with a happy disposition towards his disability.

His mother died when he was still young, he is estranged from his father. I am sure as a celebrity he has many people using him for what they can get from him. It amazes me how willing we are to accept the character of witnesses like Fresco and Samantha Taylor and think that there is no motive behind their testimonies.

Come on, an ex-girlfriend? Really? Must we believe this girl harbours no bitterness towards Oscar after he dumped her for sleeping with another man while he was at the Olympics? How come he did not shoot her then?

The press is always out to sensationalise everything Oscar does. When he broke up with Samantha Taylor, she was quick to run to the press and report that Oscar was not the person we think he is. He did not utter a word.

At the Paralympics, it was reported that he threw a tantrum because he was beaten by the Brazilian in the 200m. Truth be told, the Brazilian could not even stand on his own legs at the start of the 100m - he caused a restart by falling over. When he stood next to Oscar, his knee joints were the height of Oscar’s thighs. When the Brazilian won the 200m out of nowhere and Oscar shook his head, he was accused of throwing a tantrum.

After the race, he went over and congratulated the Brazilian. The Brazilian did not pay him the same courtesy when he won the 400m. Just because he complained about it, it was reported that he was not a good sport.

I would also complain if I spent years training and someone beats me by not playing fairly. Every time Oscar stands up for himself, he gets called egotistical.

Both the defence team and Oscar’s family have acted with dignity throughout the trial. The same cannot be said about the prosecution and the gallery on that side. Gerrie Nel even licked his lips when he stood up for the cross-examination.

His method of cross-examination leaves a lot to be desired. He slouches, he laughs at whatever Oscar says, he calls him a liar. He tries to trip him up with insignificant detail. I would have long ago told him to go to hell and been in contempt of court.

Why does no-one believe Oscar? What would he possibly have to gain by killing Reeva? Surely he could have any woman he wanted - why throw away everything you worked so hard for because of an argument? I just don’t buy it! Why would he put himself through this type of scrutiny?

It must have been humiliating for him to have to stand in the courtroom on his stumps and show the court how vulnerable he actually is. I would hate to have every sms, every movement, every decision scrutinised by the whole wide world.

The bible teaches us not to judge others - how would we stand up to such scrutiny? Fortunately, it is not up to the general public to decide whether Oscar did this intentionally, but the judge, who seems to be a decent fair person who will not tolerate the prosecution’s circus. I trust she will make the right decision.
