We have for a while now become accustomed to the Power Alerts that are shown on all Television stations during the early evenings, they warn that there is pressure on the electricity network, and come in varying shades of urgency, red being the biggest problem.
The public is requested, according to the varying colour code, to assist with the saving of electricity, so that we do not have a blackout, and we are asked to switch off of swimming pool pumps, hot water geysers, all unnecessary utensils and lights.
This more often than not happens towards the evening, which has brought to mind the possible reason behind the problem being that this is also the time when the persons who obtain “free” electricity arrive home.
If Eskom and the municipalities were to do a proper audit on connections and we could do away with these illegal connections, which appear to be rife in the system, we may land up not having a problem.
