Our Education is bad? Red herring or truth?

03 June 2014, 07:37

Our Education is bad: IN THE BLACK COMMUNITIES. That is a fact.

So, our education has been placed last in terms of Maths & Sciences. And then 146th out of 148 categories in other. Bad enough? I don't think so. So, are the kids at all the Hoer Schools coming out of those schools in a bad shape? I do not think so.

Here is the issue: Our government's problem is trying to 'maim' the able-bodied  schools so that they can start from the same starting line ( or in real terms, become as bad as their township counter-parts). It is not difficult to see that schools in the townships are bad. Parents will lie about their addresses, their incomes etc, just  so that their kids can go to former Model C schools.

My gripe though, with such surveys is the fact that they use averages. In South Africa, the majority race is Black and it is common cause that their kids are mostly in townships and rural schools and performing badly. Now, when you take the small numbers that are doing good in former Model C schools and then average this- you will come out with the worst numbers. I refuse to believe that our education is bad. It is the society that is BAD. We reward mediocrity. The Proteas are bad relative to other Cricketing teams in the world ( with the resources we have, we still are the whipping boys). Same with Bafana. Same with Athletics. Same with the hockey etc. The Boks shine merely because there are very few rugby nations. PERIOD.

Back to the schools issue. If government could study what is going well in Model C schools, and implement the same to our township and rural schools, then we would rank higher up. If UCT is ranked so high up in the world, then which kids are going to UCT? The bad ones? These kids come from our education system. They become engiineers, CA's, Architects, designers, etc.

So, it baffles me when we lampoon every kid with the same brush. The DA's class of 2014 has very young and smart people in Parliament. Products of this same educational system. Mark Shttleworth is a product of this system. We have a sizeable number of kids in Harvard & other world universities, holding their own there. Products of this system.

It is not the education system that is bad. It is our society. A society that condones SADTU. Condones kids drinking during school hours. Condones brats chasing teachers with brooms. Condones R30 000 for ' purchasing a Principal'. Condones kids that scream at the top of their voices in malls. Kids that threaten to hang themselves for not getting a play station.

It is the society that condones mediocrity. It is a society that frowns upon educated people. A society that does not reward PHD's, but rewards pop culture. A society that shuns EDUCATION.

It is a society that shuns hard work. Calls educated people names just to deride them.

There is nothing wrong with our education system. It is us that fails the system. The society.  Actually, it is NOT the government that fails the education system: it is US, the society
