During our vacation at KENTON-ON-SEA (near Port Alfred, Eastern Cape) our adorable, tame red-faced mousebird went missing on the 28th December 2013. She’s been with us for almost 6 years, since she fell out of the nest as a baby. She’s free to fly around with her own kind when and wherever she pleases, at home or elsewhere. She bonded and imprinted on us and she’s like a child to us and so loveable and loves our attention and contact. In Pretoria, where we stay, she knows the area very well as she’s free, but she always return home to us. She got lost previously but we always got her back as she goes to people after awhile and has a ring around her paw with my husband’s cell number.
We think the reason she got lost is because she doesn’t know the area and met up with her own kind. It could also be that breeding instinct kicked in. Whatever the reason, some or other time she will definitely go to people which could possibly be far away as they travel quite long distances as a flock and which she’s used to. The day she flew was quite windy and that could also have disorientated her.
We plead with anybody/anyone who might have seen her or heard about a mousebird going to people in the area or surrounding area to please contact us urgently. We miss her terribly and we know she will be looking and searching for us. She’s especially bonded with my husband and would recognize his voice over the phone as she’s very intelligent. Attached also find a photo and her name is Tswierkies.
Thank you so much!
