One of the things that both amuses and irritates me is the religious defence of taking scripture out of context. What irritates me is that the situation never changes, the minute a religious person is confronted with a piece of scripture that is either damning or controversial they bring out the “out of context” card. Yet conversely any verse that ties in with their personal beliefs, well then that verse is to be taken verbatim. What amuses me is how very few religious folk see how ironic this is. As an atheist I am often accused of cherry picking verses (all of which I have taken out of context by the way) yet religious cherry picking is apparently acceptable – and all in context – it really is amusing and absurd stuff.
The absurdity of it all is shown in these examples:
"If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them." (Leviticus 20:13)
“If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered, he shall pay her father fifty shekels of silver. He must marry the young woman, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives.” (Deuteronomy 22:28-29)
No prizes for guessing which one of these verses should be taken as verbatim and which one will be classed as taken out of context.
Why anybody would follow this crazy religion is beyond me, but if you do, at least own up and accept responsibility for what is written in your book, after all it’s not your fault your god is a psychopath.
