According to the community survey, the population of the City of Johannesburg (CBD) was 4,434, 827, in 2007. Johannesburg known as (Jozi) is the largest City in South Africa.
Most of the South African population have dreams to work in Jozi which has also attracted large number of foreign population with the same hope of making it big in the City. Since the 1980s large number of people moved to Jozi in search for work. Joburg is a result of the mines and moving to joburg used to be a right move.
Challenge/Problem
Currently the City of Johannesburg looks like it is under pressure due to over population. Jozi CBD looks over pressured due to large number of vehicles, businesses, and people in the CBD. The cleanliness of the CBD is currently unacceptable and it is also not easy to invest on property as one room in a flat can be occupied by ten people or more. The pavements of the CBD are congested and it is not easy to walk on them as stalls (street vendors) are illegally occupying the pavements.
Joburg is growing at a vast speed as there is a misconception that Jozi has answears, all these has resulted in high levels of crime, street "kids"beggars, and misuse of drugs. People's dreams have been shattered because reality of over population cannot meet demands for jobs and services.
The CBD has created a class of people who reside in the CBD. Buildings are ancient and renovating is very costly, there is negligence in fixing and providing services in the CBD as large buisness coporates and working class have moved to the surburs such as Sandton, Rosebank, Midrand and etc. Johannesburg CBD is falling apart, the more we neglect it the more costly it would be to re-build it.
Inconclusion, the focus must shift away from Jozi, Buisness and government must promote better service provision in rural areas and other small Cities.
