THE Premier Soccer League (PSL), Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Brand de Villiers, handed over the National First Division (NFD) trophy to the Limpopo-based side, Polokwane City on Wednesday evening. City won the 2012-2013 NFD season with 40 points.
The league's CEO, De Villiers heaped words of praise to Polokwane City. He said, "For a club that went through so much tragedy and pain during that fateful afternoon in November last year, we have to applaud Polokwane City for their tenacity and determination to succeed".
De Villiers further stated that he hopes the trophy will be a motivation to the team as they embark on life in the Premier Division. City’s chairman, Johnny Mogaladi also stated that they are delighted to be receiving the trophy in front of their home crowd and especially in their first Absa Premiership home match.
The Limpopo team lost 3-2 against Bloemfontein Celtic in the league encounter which took place at Peter Mokaba stadium on Wednesday night. Mogaladi said, "It is a special moment, which we cherish as the club and management. We dedicate this trophy to the four boys we lost in a tragic accident after our home match, our dedicated supporters and the people of Limpopo Province."
In their next league match, the Duncan Lechesa-coached team will lock horns against the highflying Platinum Stars at Royal Bafokeng stadium. It reamin to be seen if the Mogaladi-owned team will claim their first win in the league this season. Stars popularly known as Dikwena goes to the match confident after securing an away 1-all draw against the expensively assembled Mamelodi Sundowns at Loftus stadium.
