Last night, whilst waiting at the high school for my kids to finish their preparation for their interhigh, I felt something was different. Although I did not know what it…
My fondest memories were whilst studying, especially in between classes, visiting at my grandmother. We chatted about everything, sport, (cricket being her favourite, and also her favourite rugby team, the Bulls), news etc. She constantly asked what my course entailed, and support me throughout my studies, and dedicated my achievement of obtain my National diploma in Building with honours to her. I finished my degree soon after, and although she could not attend the graduation event, she was extremely happy…
During my early twenties, she always said not to haste into marriage and not to marry before I‘m 30. I slipped, getting married at 29 to the love of my life, and 2 days before my 30th birthday, my first born arrived. My baby girl had my grandmother incorporated into her name. I also had the privilege to show the latest addition to the family, which turns 3 in March this year.
She reached a high age, 92, outliving her spouse by almost 40 years, and being the last of her generation..
Last night she left this world at 8’ o clock last night, totally in peace with herself, her family and her God and Saviour, Jesus Christ. On Friday she affirm this belief with a close family friend on Friday, last week.
So I wish you well, and rest in comfort that you are there where we all will be, having a lot of company, like the love of her life and my father…
Soon, we will see you… but not yet…
You will be missed, but know that I will look after the rest, like you looked after me.
Go well Grandmother Marie Steenkamp. Rest in peace..
