D'Artagnan spoke these immortal words, which I have tweaked to aid me here: before drawing your weapon of choice, ask yourself not what you are killing, but rather what you are allowing to live. Many an intellectual battle has been fought over deciding whom the victory belongs to. A little incentive to help us decide, a sword defends and destroys, while a pen creates, defends, destroys and does so much more. Thus, the pen can safely say, both victory and vengeance are mine.
Some might argue that Caesar or Napoleon would not have achieved the fame on the battlefield that they had, had it not been for the sword, but let me top that once more and say that had it not been for the pen, then the battle plan that in had in effect won the day would not have been created which would subsequently have lead to the battle not having been won.
The sword saw many a city fall at its hand, but then again, it was the pen and by extension the mind that thought up the strategy that insured victory. Where would we be without the words of Shakespeare and others who played a hand in who and what we became today? We would still be stuck in the Iron or the Bronze Age were it not for the wise person who picked up a pen and whose mind created the map that led us here.
Take the bible for examples, yes, it is true that battles were fought with swords over religion and beliefs, but in the end, the pen triumphed as, had it not been for the pen, then one of the main sources behind the world’s belief’s would not have come into being.
A sword can only do so much, whereas the possibilities that are available when one has a pen in their hands are without limit. Swords hurt and kill people, but so does the pen by using words as its means of doing so. Swords destroy lives and so do pens, they destroy people and reputations. That is part of the reason why people are told to think before they ink, as in some cases the damage has already been done and cannot be erased. So, if asked which weapon I favour, it will always be the mighty pen, as the sword does not even reach the possibilities that the pen does. The pen’s creations know no limit and have no end. Where will yours take you the next time you reach for it, I cannot wait to find out.
