I have often wondered on a number of occasions what the world’s reaction would be to the news (God Forbid) of Tata Mandela’s passing. As the most prominent statesman of all time who is loved by all around the globe the most obvious reaction to predict would be great heartbreak and sadness. But what would then be the long term reaction on the family level, national level and global level. Tata has always portrayed this pillar of strength that ensures every individuals happiness and harmony amongst individuals. He has taught the world, or at least made a tremendous attempt to teach the world what humanity and humility means. He sure has lived a very long life and has definitely served his purpose on this earth, but it seems now he is slowly taking the last sips in his glass of life juice.
Could the commotion that is currently happening in his family be an indication of how things will be when his gone? It definitely does worry me. The current situation in the Mandela family is the total opposite of what the man Tata stands for as a family man and as a world citizen. It seems that certain members of the family are already going astray, and then I ask where the respect is in that. The behaviour that has been displayed by the oldest surviving male descendant in the family, Mandla Mandela in recent weeks has been rather very distasteful more especially considering that he has the same blood as Tata flowing in his veins. He has in one particular instance shown no respect at all for his old man by not respecting his wish of choosing to be buried in Qunu. He would rather have Madiba buried in Mvezo where he happens to be chief obviously leaving us wondering whose interests he has at heart. At a time when the family should be supporting each other and praying for the health of Tata, they are up and down in court about the burial of their father who hasn’t even passed on yet. The most recent incident was Mandla Mandela being alleged of having pointed a gun at another motorist in Mthatha, and the ironic part is that this all happened on Nelson Mandela Rd. if this behaviour by the family is not spitting at the old man’s memory, then I don’t know what is.
I am embarrassed as citizen of this country at what the world will think of us, while they pray for the old man his own family is bickering. After this display of behaviour by the Mandelas, I feel the need to worry about what the rest of the world become when there is no longer a Tata to please or respect.
