As I glanced through the The Times paper with its front page story on child criminals and the photo of farmworkers fleeing with merchandise I find it hard to think the future will be positive.
So this week as hoards of children flock to school I wonder whether this time will become meaningful or a prelude to hopelessness, although if a girl can strive for distinctions in a leaking shack by candlelight and succeed but be prevented due to financial constraints then the situation is sad indeed. Jonathan Jansen asked in his article where is our dignity?
What is dignity ,where are the role models which represent it ,not our leaders, teachers ,family or friends ,the community which represents society is chaotic and angered ,do our representatives not feel abashed ,can those in power not abase themselves.
My mind ponders the outcome of many lives ,what future is there for my little brother who starts high school or my older brother who has earned his degree and can’t find a job ,the part timer at work who is a matric this year or even the 20 something who works at the hardware store and only wants a home of his own ,a future for his child .
News 24 had an article about the good aspects of South Africa that itself is true along with the bad ,our country is not the best and certainly not the worst ,sure the situation can be worse but it can be better all the same.
The question is should education be lowered so more can pass or raised so that students can strive for more ,do citizens want more money or just affordability and basic rights ,are the politicians to blame or has society become so lazy that we are a generation of dependents rather then resourceful and creative.
Something to think about is that people can live in an almost identical situation but live entirely different lives ,if life is all about what ifs it won’t matter if you are rich or a pauper ,talented or clumsy ,intelligent or a ‘slow learner’ as Angie Motshekga puts it .When it comes down to it its ones own perseverance ,pride and dignity that set out the successors from the down trodden .
