The genesis of this article lies in a meeting of the well-known. American medium was/is supposed to have the gift of contacting spirits, ghosts and whatnot.
First let us use a name as a starting point. “Jonathan”. How many Jonathans are there in a hall filled with people at 50% males and 50% females. Assume the hall is occupied by 1000 persons. How many Jonathan Davies are possibly in that hall. The chances are close to zero. There may be several Jonathans but Jonathan Davies will have a number approaching zero.
I have a family member who is named John Edward. The same can be applied to Peter and Paul. And their surnames.
The real Jonathan bounces onto the stage and surveys the sea of grieving faces. His modus operandi would go something like this: “There is a beloved mother in this hall who has lost a dear one. The loved one who has passed over carries the name Pete” “Hold on, that name is unclear and not coming over properly,” Our medium friend is busy with a game of statistics.”Several people will indicate they have lost a Pete, Jonathan would again ask for hands but for a Peter. (there are more Peters than Petes) our friend will start matching Peters to raised hands and start connecting Peters to bereaving mothers by asking for simple details which he manipulates and offers it to someone who is unlikely to argue in such a sombre setting. Should there be a fair number of deceased Peters then the grieving Family members are all called up to the stage and occupy seats arranged in a close arc. Jonathan would ask questions and hail the spirits of most of theExpectant family members on the stage. The physical act is like someone who is actually speaking to something unseen and stopping to listen to what the “unseen” has to say in return. It is all an elaborate scam to get unsuspecting persons to open their pockets. People are less likely to argue under the conditions which they are exposed to and still the stress of losing a family member. The saddest part of the scam is those that are remaining actually believe their loved one spoke to them.THE MEDIUM’S REAL NAME HAS NOT BEEN MENTIONED
