A small addition to the debate that is raging between Christians and atheists/theists. I am not going to provide references, if you think this is not correct, please provide proof, remembering that simply because it is written does not make it true. I have interacted with many scientists in my life, so this is based on discussions with REAL scientists.
Short answer is that there is no definitive proof, but consider the following:
1. We understand about 7% of the universe.
2. Scientists have determined that the universe is expanding at an ever increasing rate – this is contrary to what one would expect (more or less like blowing up a balloon at constant rate, the increase in diameter gets less and less with time). So there is a force or energy that makes this happen – the term “dark energy” has been coined to explain why this happen. We have no idea what this is.
3. It has also been established that there is “something” that influences electromagnetic radiation we observe from the universe. This something is now called “dark matter”. We have no idea what that is.
For this reason scientists want more sensitive instruments all the time to be able to do more sensitive observations to clear up some of these questions. In many case they have theories that is consistent with what is being observed, but that in no way proof the theory – go read about pulsars – a model is proposed that fits the observation, but whether a pulsar really looks like scientists claim has not been proven. More sensitive instruments will help to either proof, refine or refute existing theories and be instrumental in increasing our understanding of the universe and specifically how everything came to be as we will in essence be able to look further back in time.
So if anyone is going to tell me that they can be 100% sure of anything based on a collective 7% understanding of the universe (so you as an individual would do well to understand 1%) I will be surprised. Combine this with the fact when looking at top scientists (I’m talking practising scientists with more than 30 years experience, way beyond PhD level) you get both Christians and atheists/theists I have to conclude that there is some doubt either way – guess this is why the debate is raging on.
So if you are an atheist, there is no need to knock Christians. If you are Christian live a love that show that you are one. Looking at the comments on news24 neither Christians nor atheists/theists has been covering themselves in glory or can claim “moral” highground.
