Do you know what makes me sick to the core? People who are “Proudly South African.”
Those who celebrate mediocrity and have very little understanding of excellence; those who are content with the manner in which the corrupt communist ANC-cadres are destroying the country; those who think, that by brown-nosing the fats cats in government, they will be awarded tenders and a place at the feeding trough with the corrupt “leedas” of this godforsaken country.
And especially those of my white brothers and sisters (with their heads in the sand), who think that by saying they are “Proudly South African,” will make them sound less racially prejudiced.
I grew up in this country and came from a relatively poor family. I literally worked my hands to the bone for what I have today. I studied hard, qualified myself as best I could, paid taxes, bought a house with hard earned money, put my children through school, contributed to pension and medical aid schemes, lived within the law, never received a government grant or a study bursary, and had to do compulsory military service.
I admit wholeheartedly that I benefited under Apartheid, and, while the Nats were in power, lived in a country where Draconian laws were applied to black people – no one can ever be proud of that.
But let me be quite clear – I know what it takes to make a person “proud” of his/her country:
It is being recognised internationally as a country that consistently produces some of the best doctors, scientists, technicians, artisans, nurses, teachers, researchers, and sportsmen and sportswomen in the world. It is living in a country where basic service delivery is reliable and where the infrastructure is maintained and expanded to keep up with a growing population.
In a country where people are employed for their qualifications and skills – where schools, hospitals, and emergency services are staffed with people who actually “work.” In a country where municipal “managers” can actually “manage,” – where municipalities don’t go bankrupt.
In a country where hordes of “strikas” do not pillage, rob, and kill – while to toi-toiing and demanding their “rights.”
In a country where rape, murder, and corruption, are not daily occurrences – and where even our rhinos are safe. Where babies and grannies are not raped and killed by heartless thugs. Where criminals don’t have more “rights” than their victims.
In a country where the quality of our manufactured goods and farm produce is of the highest standards.
In a country where the highest seat in government is not awarded to a thieving, philandering, scoundrel who is a bloody embarrassment to all of its citizens.
So, my fellow “Proud South Africans,” if you want to brag about your national pride, patriotism and social cohesion, consider the points I’ve raised in the above rant – then see if you’re still so “Proud.”
PS Please do not turn this post into a racist exchange of blows – it was never my intention.
