Questions for a Creationist

08 October 2012, 08:32

This article is an expansion of a comment I made on Tyronehster’s article Let’s Talk Origins. For simplicity’s sake I’m going to split up the questions to Old Earth Creationist (OEC), earth is billions years old, and Young Earth Creationist (YEC), earth is less than ten thousand years old.

Firstly the OEC. Creationists are often complaining about the lack of transitional fossils. This is not going to be a debate about transitional fossils. I only mention them to draw the reader’s attention to the fact that they accept the fact that there are fossils that differ over time and because they are OEC they agree to the dating methods.

So how do the OEC explain the fossils that we do have? The only way that can explain them is that either they believe in some form if evolution (Here I’m using evolution in a general sense and not specifically Darwin’s theory. When talking about the Theory of Evolution I’ll use ToE.) or God is continuously creating new species from scratch. As an aside, when I say God you should read [insert chosen deity here], it is just easier to type God.

Those that accept some form of evolution, being creationist, would have to say that the process is guided. What are mechanisms that guide the processes? I know you’ll answer God Did It ™ but I’m more interested in the when and how. Some will say that God planed it all at the moment of creation, I’ll answer that later, while others will say he does it all the time at conception. If God is involved at conception not only does he have his hands full juggling balls but it would also mean that you don’t have free will. Your thoughts are controlled by your genes and environment and since God controls both it would mean you only have the illusion of free will. Also that would mean that God is responsible for all the good and bad mutations in nature. You would also have to explain why we see random mutations if God is responsible for all mutations.

If humans are the pinnacle of creation, as creationist would like us to believe, why did it take so long before we got here? Over 90% of all species that have ever existed went extinct before humans were walking upright. Whether you believe that God guided evolution or one that created from scratch you would have to concede that either he just doesn’t care, bad designer or not so forward looking as you would like. As to the time frame before we got here, maybe the reason is he just doesn’t care about us, just because your mom called you special doesn’t make it so.

I don’t know of anyone that would not accept the result of a DNA paternity test. Extrapolating from this we can show that we are related to all other living organisms. Why would a God that created species from scratch do this? Also after a extinction event why don’t we see fully formed animals suddenly appearing; let me rephrase, why isn’t there a fully formed  elephant 65 million years ago, around about the time the dinosaurs went extinct, or humans for that matter?

Now for the YEC. Before I ask you a question let me tell you a story about Fib.

Fib is a friend of mine from the nth dimension (Because he is from the nth dimension we see him as an invisible pink unicorn). Last week Thursday he created the universe as you see it today. I only know this because last week Friday, while visiting me, he got rather anxious when he saw my copy of Jasper Fford’s book One of Our Thursdays is Missing. Let’s just say that the misunderstanding was sorted out and he hasn’t lost his job and you can still see him creating universes on a Thursday.

Can you understand how the above story carries the same weight, in my mind, as the one in your holy book? Yes you might say that your book was written thousands of years ago, to that I would reply that mine is from the beginning of time and since mine is from first source information it is more accurate.

Being a YEC you don’t accept the methods to date the age of the earth. So to those of you in the Cape do you trust the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station won’t just blow up for no reason?
Or that modern medicines with their isotopes and radiation treatment will all or sudden just stop working? The reason I ask this is that they all rely on atomic theory and quantum theory and so does the dating methods used to date the earth. Did you notice I used the word theory twice in that sentence? You see ToE is not the only theory out there.

I had some more questions but I think this post is long enough for now but I leave you with one more that has been bugging me. What are angles? Are the insects (6 limbs), birds (feathers) or mammals (hair)? Or maybe the question should be rephrased; where are the fish and reptilian parts?
