I am writing this article with the hope that most of the people who comment on various political issues on News24 did get the chance to vote before 1994.
Most of the times on this forum when there is a topic about the end of apartheid I always come across comments like "we voted yes in the 1992 referendum to end apartheid".
Fair enough, that is very commendable and cannot be disputed. In fact a lot of people played huge roles in the demise of apartheid but a few have since taken all the credit.
My question though, to those who could vote before '94, is how many elections did the NP win with your vote, were there no other political parties who contested the NP who had different ideas to the NP especially when it came to race classifications?
If you did not vote for the NP and did not believe in what they were doing, what did you do about it? Did you just sit and reap the rewards that came from the same policies you did not like?
So you tell me, if all along you cast your vote to keep the architects of apartheid, what suddenly came to you that you decided to vote YES and end apartheid ?
In not so distance future, I will take out the NP and replace it with the ANC and everything else will be the same.
I am only trying to genuinely understand why with the overwhelming majority that voted YES apartheid lasted as long as it did.
NO TROLLING PLEASE.
