RAPE, No amount of “Cleansing Ceremonies” will make it disappear

07 January 2013, 11:05

We are faced with the scourge of rape every day of every waking hour. And the ANC thinks “Cleansing  Ceremonies” are the solution. Today a 14 year old girl was raped by two boys who were as young as she is. 6 young boys face a murder trial after raping and stoning 3 children to death. A 73 year old woman is raped by a 30-40 year old man. A brother rapes his sister and then allows his friend to rape her as well. A 17 year old girl is raped by a grown man. Man rapes 8 year old boy. In a local tavern a girl is raped while the patrons stand by and cheer the rapist on.  A spate of rapes happening in the Limpopo Province. Natal has the highest “granny rapes” in our country. All raped by young men. These and more rapes have happened in South Africa on the first 3 days of the New Year!

What is a Cleansing Ceremony? Will it arrest the rapists, will it make them face the full brunt of the law, will it help to erase the shame the victim has to endure? Will it stop rapists from raping more and more innocent helpless victims? No it will not.  I guarantee that during said ceremony rapists will continue doing what they do – raping! I would add that these Cleansing Ceremonies have been performed since 1994 – and our country continues spiraling downwards into a morass of Crime, Rapes and Corruption.  Have the Gods abandoned us or are the Ancestors on a holiday!

These Mahdis of Traditional Leaders, including our Honourable President probably know that the rapes are perpetrated by those who believe in these very Traditional Ceremonies. Look at the statistics? I don’t deny that there is rape commited by every Nationality in South Africa – but because of our demographics  - most of the rapists are believers in Mr Zuma’s  “Cleansing Ceremony”!  But Mr Zuma and his cronies need a wake up call – its not working!!!  And right thinking South Africans from all walks of life should not be in denial of these facts!

Has the ANC thought of what they can do to try and stop these rapes from happening? Other than fairy tales and fables? We need palpable evidence that these Ceremonies do work or else they should get back to reality. The reality is we need action in the form of education – education from parents in hearth and home, education in schools, education at Political rallies, Church Services and wherever people congregate – in fact STOP RAPE should become our countries Mantra.  Laws should be created and implemented to allow people to perform citizens arrests – offer rewards so that mob justice and vigilantism can be avoided.

What about a revolt against Rape – like they did in India. The rape of one girl (and hundreds of untold rapes) brought India to a standstill. It made the world sit up and take note that here was a people that would face their government and its police head on. They were prepared to go down fighting for what they believed was one of the worst crimes inflicted on women – rape! And it is!

Imagine if the ANC and Mr Zuma were to lead this revolt – they will add credibility to their leadership qualities, which is at its lowest at the moment. And the ANC Woman’s League? This excuse for an organization marched for Zumas “Spear” portrait, they stood en masse at the courts to defend Mr Zumas rape charges, they rallied around Julius Malema and now in Mangaung they stood up and voted for Mr Zumas next term of office. But their silence is deafening when it comes to real issues. Issues like RAPE, VIOLENCE, EDUCATION AND SCHOOL PREGNANCIES! They will of course rally in their thousands at the “Cleansing Ceremonies”. Supporting Mr Zuma and the Traditional Leaders who want to take us back to tribal laws and traditions.

Then the question must be asked – were there rapes back in the day of King Shaka? If there was, what consequences did the rapist face? Remembering that Human Rights was non existent! Were the rapists castrated, beheaded or buried alive? So if we wish to adopt archaic tribal laws should we not look at the old ways of punishing criminals? Bearing in mind that this should only apply to those people who live under and accept the tribal way of life. Then one wonders, what will happen to the Indian, Black, Coloured, White, Pink and Blue rapists who dont accept tribal laws?

Our society is also guilty of standing by while the scourge of rape becomes a daily occurance. We continue being in denial of what is happening. We look at crime as a “Black” or “White” issue. We refuse to accept that rape, violence and corruption is seeping into the very hearts of society. It is tearing society apart at the seams. Children, the leaders of the future are becoming immune to rape and violence. To them its just another day and another rape.

Our Constitution is supposed to protect us. But somehow it protects the criminals more than the victims. What recourse for the 3 little children that were raped and stoned? And what about the helpless grandmother raped in front of her young grandsons. I would like to see the Cleansing Ceremony wash away their pain and suffering. This is merely  a celebration of a gathering of people wanting to live out their tribal fantasies by calling it a “Cleansing Ceremony”!

Lets see if the rapes decline after the singing, dancing and slaughtering. Lets see if the Gods hear us and the Ancestors make their appearances? If you are a believer and I offended you, then I apologise. But I expect you to accept or deny if this is the answer to the rapes enveloping our country?
