An open sewer in 5th Avenue in Alexandra, Johannesburg has been gushing raw sewerage for years and despite it posing serious health risks, the City and the local councillors do not seem committed to fix it.
Anita Ferri is involved with a charitable organisation in Alexandra and reported this open sewer on Mobilitate recently.
Anita goes to Alexandra every Saturday to help teach mathematics to some of the children as part of the Rays of Hope organisation.
Anita walked around recently after the headmaster of the school thought it might be a good idea for the tutors to see the conditions under which some of the kids live.
“We walked past the women’s hostel and not only is this a dumping site but the sewerage is running hard and fast. It is not just a trickle and the stench is something else,” she said.
Anita was told by some of the locals that the sewerage has been running like this for years.
“I asked some people who are involved with the child-headed households in the community and was told that at times people have suffered from cholera but this has not been confirmed by health officials,” said Anita.
“There seems to be a hopeless acceptance in the townships and it just makes me angry to see how little the municipality/ ward councillors are doing for their own communities despite being paid very well”.
Mobilitate logged the call with Joburg Water and received a reference number for the call within a few hours. It remains to be seen whether they will act just as quick with a resolution.
The ward councillor could not be reached.
