Reaching out, and looking in – Homosexuality

03 March 2014, 06:59

Many moons ago, I wrote a piece, a piece that spoke about my own journey of coming out. I faced rejection, from family and from friends… I did hate them, why could they not accept me, why would they condemn me for who I was and use the Christian God, by saying that He does not make mistakes, he did not make me this way? I have been called many things, things that are not only hurtful but degrading… “You are a faggot”, “You are an abomination to the Lord, our God”, and “You are a sick Pedo” … and the list indeed does go on. Yet even though I have felt the hate and the scorn, I have still managed to be a person with morals, integrity and want to have the same rights as everyone else does. I want to be able to get married to someone that I love and care for. I want to be recognised as an equal citizen of the country I live in. Thankfully …. South Africa is such a country, but sadly a lot of countries are not, they either condemn it outright or they put people to death for their sexual orientation.

Last year, Mother Russia, passed a law that forbids anyone from speaking or promoting homosexuality, this opened a flood gate for vigilantism. Young men have been lured out and publically shamed for being homosexual, these atrocities were filmed and placed on media platforms like and Youtube. A group called Occupy Paedophilia is one such vigilante group, gay men are forced to publicly humiliate themselves by drinking urine, or having sexual acts performed on 2 litre bottles. One man has lost his life already because of these acts. They are often beaten, in public, while the bystanders watch and cheer. The Russian Government has not done anything to prevent this; in fact, they have gone so far to even arrest gay men and woman. The Russian Government continues to spread the lie that it is to protect children from these “unholy acts committed in front of God”. Support for the Russian LGBTI community has poured in from around the world, but sadly, it was done in word only. They are still prosecuted, and their voices are just one of many of those that are being discriminated against in this world.

This year we had Uganda, passed a law that could get you life imprisonment if you are found guilty of being gay. Their president said this “Gay Oral sex will give you worms” that is the basis of his argument and why the law was signed into effect. Other African countries like Nigeria has been at the forefront of anti-homosexuality for longer, in some states where Sharia is dominant homosexual were publically put to death by a linch mob in the streets. Another received 20 lashes for supposed homosexual behaviour.

Even in South Africa we severe cases of hatred against the LGBTQI community, on the 14 February 2014 a paper in Port Elizabeth had a front page spread about a gay couple who got married. This got the heterosexual community in a complete uproar… “How sad to see you waste front page space with a huge photograph of two homosexuals getting married. Your moral standards have hit an all-time low” - SY, “GAY marriage is disgusting and a huge sin” - GARY, and my personal favourite, “THE Weekend Post splashed a picture of two gay men and their “romantic vows” over their front page. This might be acceptable as per our constitution and to a minority of your readers, but a majority of Christians and normal SA citizens don’t want it stuffed down their throats” – H. STANDER, even on the comment section a “good Christian woman” said that it is disgusting and vile that someone would liken God to homosexuals .. when the person remarked that Jesus had two dads and he turned out alright.

The list goes on, so many of these people treated with such hate, why? Because they happen to love someone who is the same gender as they are?

I have heard every possible argument with regards to why Homosexuality is wrong, so let us start with the Bible… so many verses condemn it, so if the Bible says it therefore it must be right? WRONG, there are several other passages that condones death to a person, namely, working on the Sabbath, planting of different corps in the same field… other abominations include eating shellfish, touching the skin of a dead pig, it condones the owning of slaves, and treating woman like second class citizens. Yet when I bring up these passages in conversation, I am told I am pulling the Bible out of context!   When anyone opens an argument by saying “The Bible says…” he has already lost the debate on this matter.   Christians, will be the first to tell you how much God loves you, BUT, if you are a homosexual you are going to hell, and they will even get someone to help you there quicker. Or “Love the sinner not the Sin” I have heard that one a few times as well.

The next argument is that it is against nature. It has been documented that homosexuality has been found in 1500 species across the globe, from the African lion to the humble penguin. Yet when you use this line they tell you out right that they are sick of hearing of this analogy. Yet science dictates and try as you might you cannot disprove the facts. They further state that it is a man and a woman, I do not discount that, because let’s face it, two of the same gender cannot have children, biologically, but then again … there are always other avenues to consider.

It will destroy the family unit…. Once again, there is no proof that this is a fact. Circumstance is what destroys the family unit. Infidelity, abuse of the spouse and children, the lack of love and compassion that is what destroys the family unit, not the sexual orientation of people. Gay parents are the same as any other parent, they love their kids (one hope they do) they try to give a loving, stable and safe environment where their kids can grow up in and hopefully turn out for the best.

Gay people are about sex and drugs, exactly where in this universe do they get these statistics? Sure admittedly we all like sex, but no more or less than say heterosexual couples. Drugs, well that really is a personal thing is it not? This concept irritates me… very much so because I am automatically classed as someone who fornicates furiously and have a jolly old wild time while doing it… I WISH! It is the perception of heterosexuals that this is the truth. Heterosexual only focus on one small aspect of being homosexual … the sex part, they really have a very unhealthy obsession with what goes on in a homosexual’s bedroom.

You cannot be born gay, you choose it. First off I would like to see anyone “choose” to live their lives in complete misery, by being constantly ridiculed, vilified and persecuted for “choosing” to be this way. Now, science may not have conclusively proven that you are born that way but it has come very close in doing so. There are several case studies that supports being homosexual are a natural occurrence. Sure that being said it is pretty much down to the genetic factor and the environmental factor that does point in that direction yet it does not disprove the existence of the so called “gay-gene”.  I put “Gay Lifestyle” in this category of the argument as well, I am not rich enough to have a “Gay-Lifestyle” I have a life yes, and no it is not stylish by any means.

Gay People spread aids, again it is the virus that does the spreading, two people who are not infected can go at it for days, they only thing they might suffer from is exhaustion, but not HIV/AIDS. It is also been proven factually that more heterosexual people suffer from HIV/AIDS… do not believe me well look at the 3rd world countries around the world who are facing the HIV/AIDS crisis at the moment. I am not saying that it is not a problem, because it is, but it is not an exclusive LGBTQI problem.

So I am now asking you to sit down and speak to a Gay person, get to know them and I promise you that you will find not only a human being but a person who deserves to be loved and respected, regardless of the sexual preferences. You will find a kindred spirit that believes in love for mankind, a person that tries his or her best to be a morally just person and who lives life to its fullest … just like you.

I am not asking you to support gay rights, I am asking you to support human rights because gay right are human rights. We are not here to spread propaganda, or promote and agenda of any kind. We are just asking to be accepted as part of your society and live among you as your brothers and sisters. We know what suffering is, we know what it is to be hated … but we would rather be accepted and loved for who and what we are not as what we are made out to be. We are not paedophiles we do not consort with animals in any shape or form. We do not cause earthquakes or floods nor do we command ice storms to decimate your small little town. We are just fellow human beings who care enough about you to tell you how we feel and in turn we try our best to hear your views and opinions even If they do not align with our own.
