The Oscar Pistorius case has resulted in thousands of comments by people of all colours and creeds, from all walks of life, but who all seem to have one thing in common : they all know the truth – the truth about OP and his mental health, the truth about the cell phone calls and sms’s, the truth about the argument and the truth about what happened.
I do not belong to the Pistorians, but I think that we should do a little reality check here.
The fact of the matter is that there is only one person who knows all the truths, and that person is Oscar himself. And Oscar himself has said that he pulled the trigger. So Oscar is guilty of something – but what has not yet been established.
So let’s look at the facts that we do know :
FACT – Oscar pulled the trigger
FACT – Reeva died as a result
FACT – Oscar’s bail application succeeded
FACT – Oscar’s appeal against some of his bail conditions succeeded
The last two FACTS would not have occurred had the State, in the form of Gerrie Nel, had a strong case on which to base their charges. You can shout all you like about people having money and getting away with murder. Well, if he has the money to pay for a better lawyer than the chief State Prosecutor, then good luck to him. I certainly don’t think Gerrie Nel has many laurels to rest on so far.
All the speculation about whether or not he had on his prostheses, whether or not he called out first, whether or not he knew who was behind the door – the truth about all of this will emerge at the time of the trial – if the matter gets that far.
All the speculation from “friends” – some of whom only knew him for 3 hours – is nothing but that – speculation.
Oscar has been called a number of things – including “speed freak”. Most 20-something guys who can afford it would love to buy a fast car or a speed boat. Or a motor bike. My guess is that the all of these activities were perhaps Oscar’s way of overcoming adversity.
Now onlookers (who appear not to have been part of his recent weekend “party”) are commenting on him doing shooters, “being flirtatious” with women, etc. He was out with friends, mutual friends of his and Reeva’s. Was he the only one doing shooters ? Were the women he was “being flirtatious” with part of his group ? Did anybody overhear the conversations ?
His trial begins on 4 June and may continue for months or even years whilst evidence is presented by both sides.
The reality is that in law Oscar is innocent until proven guilty of a crime in a court of Law. What that crime eventually is we will have to wait and see.
The reality is that until such time as Oscar is locked up behind bars, if and when that happens, he is going to be leading his life as “normally” as possible under the circumstances.
The reality also is that South Africa’s legal system is so screwed up that who knows who decides what is “fair” and what is “just”.
The reality is that whatever the outcome of Oscar’s trial, reality is going to suck for some people.
