Abortion is a highly contentious and emotive topic and I would like to state this upfront: I am in no way condemning people that have had abortions or are thinking of having an abortion. The point I will attempt to bring across is why I believe that some of the reasons that are used to justify abortion are inadequate. Please be objective when reading my comments and try to see my point of view.
Murder is defined (my own definition) as unjustified taking of life of another human being. This basically means the reason for killing another human being is inadequate. A justified killing would be self-defence or the defence of someone else’s life. Abortion is a killing of an unborn human being. We know that humans always produce humans, so a pregnant woman has a human being growing inside of her, no matter what stage of development the human being is in. So it should be clear that abortion is terminating the life of a human being. The question is what are the reasons for the terminating the lives of human being?
One reason that can be utilised for justifying abortion is the maturity and financial means of the parents in question in that the couple might be too young to be parents and they might not have financial means of supporting themselves let alone a baby. These are good reasons if they are only seen from the surface level but they are totally inconsistent. If it is okay to abort a baby for reasons that the parents are immature or are not financially able to support the child, why is it not okay to do the same to a 1 year old (or whatever age after the child is born)?
Surely immaturity and financial strife are the same for when the child is in the womb and when they are outside the womb. The inconsistency of this line of thinking is demonstrated when it must be applied to children that are already born, if not, then reasons must be given as to why it is okay to kill a child in the womb but not outside the womb.
What about women that have been sexually violated and become pregnant because of that? Sexual assault is a horrible thing to have happen to anyone and I sympathise to anyone that has experienced such violence. Keeping the baby would be a constant reminder to the women of the violence for the rest of the child’s life. Both the woman and the baby are innocent, but terminating the life of the baby is punishing the baby for what his or her father did. I do not think that this something that is fair on the baby.
What about children with debilitating illnesses and extreme deformity? None of us can tell the future and none of us has a right to terminate the life of another human being unjustifiably. If a debilitating illness is detected before the child is born, we do not know how the child’s life will turn out in the future. We do not know what medical advances would be made in the future that would improve the life of the child with the disease.
Again, if we apply the same rule to terminate pregnancies due to illnesses and deformities, why can we not apply the same to children that have been born healthy and only suffer the illnesses when they are older? This line of reasoning is inconsistent and therefore I feel that it should be abandoned.
I, of course, have not evaluated the whole spectrum of reasons for abortion, the ones I have touched on are those are I have come across on the internet and from conversations with acquaintances. At the end of the day, we have choices and we are responsible for our own lives.
If you are able to create a child then it is upon you to take care of the child because you ought to know what the ramifications are. Please do not see this as a judgement on those that have had abortion or those that are thinking of having one. These are just my thoughts that the reasoning (that I came across) is inadequate and inconsistent. Remember, that the person that is making the decision to abort a child was not aborted themselves but was given a chance to live and we should extend the same courtesy to the unborn.
