I have to credit the September issue of Marie Claire South Africa for educating me on this new phenomena. I had no idea it existed.
"Reborn Dolls" started around 1990 in an effort to create more realistic dolls. It has now taken on an entire culture where the dolls are created so humanly real that it can be hard to distinguish from afar. They can rock, cry, make infant babble noises, suck dummies ect. If they are "premature" reborns they come stocked with an incubator and all.
Originally they were designed as art but now they are increasingly being purchased by Moms having lost a baby or older ladies suffering from Empty Nest Syndrome or just childless ladies longing to cuddle a little one. Psychologists are supposedly in two minds as to the benefit of this process. Cuddling is said to release a cascade of hormones very beneficial to ones emotional being and this can be achieved with these dolls. Moms of "Reborns" form groups that regularly gather for playdates and coffee. Dolls are also issued with Birth or Adoption certificates.
Most people simply label this evolving culture as creepy. I'm inclined to agree that it's very weird and foreign to me. I'm open to hearing thoughts though because as with most things, I probably shouldn't judge something I know very little about. Any ideas?
