As a South African, I think a comment on this whole Red October campaign is needed.
Firstly, their “statistics” that are being used to get white people stirred up are false. When you point this out, they’re quick to state that, “ah but one white murder is one too many”. Well I do agree, but let’s say that one murder is one too many. Our fight against crime must be inclusive not exclusive as it affects each and every South African.
The power of the people has proved the world over that it is stronger than any army. In unity there is strength so rather call on each civilian to protest against this scourge than keeping it exclusively to one race. Has the horrible days of apartheid taught us nothing? Maybe some people were oblivious to the fact that non-whites were persecuted, maimed and murdered. They were confined under the Group Areas act, restricted in association and travel. The saddest thing under apartheid was seeing white youngsters taking full advantage of their privilege without the slightest respect for people of other races especially for our fathers and mothers.
Secondly, whatever hopes this Whites only movement had to make their cause even remotely plausible fell flat when they got that impulsive bigot Steve Hofmeyer involved. But come to think of it after listening and seeing their views they all resonate his sentiments. I suppose it’s just a swop of khaki outfits for red t-shirts. Their real identity can be clearly seen through their poorly disguised façade.
No one race can live without the other in this country. It takes each and every citizen to work towards the common cause of a better life for every one of us. We are individuals each uniquely different with a wealth of talent and knowledge and if we can use this in an optimistic progressive way, then my fellow citizen the possibilities are endless.
