People, listen up…..
I just called you people because that is what you are. We are all bound by the same rules that govern people:
1) Keep yourself from harm (Stay alive)
2) Sustain your life with water & nutrients (Water & Food)
3) Pro-create (Have babies)
It’s quite simple. However in our quest as a species to adhere to these rules we (in the absence of major physical weaponry such as claws, fast speed, great strength or long canines) have evolved a brain that bypasses our need for these thing by allowing us to develop ‘work-arounds’ such as clubs, spears, bows & arrows, fire making, clothing, cooking (even our guts are weak), ropes, knifes, swords, helmets, axes, the list goes on and on…..
However, these are all physical things, because the same brain that allows us to understand the world’s dangers and obstacles and allows us to examine and develop workarounds to solve our problems doesn’t have a conventional off switch. That is to say, it doesn’t just stop thinking about an unknown until it is convinced that it has the answer to explain it. It’s just our nature to do so.
So once we have solved our daily issues such as how to kill that bear or snare that rabbit and we sit around the camp fire, people start to wonder about things bit by bit. What is the sun? What is the Moon?
What are clouds, how does water fall from the sky? – It must be stored up there somehow. Perhaps by a Water Boss who sprays the rain down out of a huge bucket when the people are good, but not when they are bad! Maybe the boss sits on top of the clouds because rain only comes when there are clouds. Maybe he makes thunder when he is angry.
So now once the “wise” man of the village has told the people about this Water Boss it allows everyone to relax and they don’t need to think too much about this unknown – because it is not an unknown anymore. The brain has its answer, it is satisfied and its fears are resolved. It is now free to think about other things, and possibly invent other things like the Sun Boss or the River Boss or the Animal Boss that occasionally gives an animal enough cunning or strength to kill a hunter during a hunt because that hunter obviously had done something wrong and offended the Animal Boss.
It’s really not difficult to imagine how religion has developed from there. It’s so glaringly obvious.
But to get to the point of this article: The solutions to our thoughts and even the propagation of new thoughts are so stunted by religion that many of us don’t even bother to develop an understanding of things. Such as: How old is the world? Where did the fossils of Dinosaurs come from? Why do Chimps and Humans share something like +/- 98% of our DNA? These things are things that religion has already got predefined solutions for or can be “interpreted” from the bible to gain a solution.
So in conclusion, please people, remember that the bible and other books were written by people who just wanted and understanding of the world (and maybe some control over others, but that’s another article). They didn’t have the technologies and sciences that we have to help them to understand the world from a logical point of view. We do have these things. I hope that more and more of us get with the times and try to cast off the shackles of religious dogma and get to know our very interesting world by looking at the real facts developed by real people who have done the work and made the effort to understand the worlds truly amazing and explainable reality.
