Religion offends but peace liberates.
We are living in the world where everyone is free to do whatever they want, to be whatever they want to be and to be accepted as such. Liberty is for everyone and the individual’s lifestyle should not be probed. There is only one person we going to give an account to and that is God. The bible makes it clear that God is the only one who will bring judgment to His people according to how they have lived their lives on Earth. “Rejoice, O young man, in your youth and let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth. Walk in the ways of your heart and in your sight of your eyes, but know that for all these God will bring you into judgment.” Ecclesiastes 11:9. (NKJV)
What is the problem?
There is much controversy that is going on about homosexuality and Christianity; these two seem to be against each other. Many ‘Professing Christians’ seem to have a problem with gays and lesbians and they are considered to be judgmental towards them. Generally, homosexuals are considered to be against the will of God, that of creation, talking to many religious people, they will tell you that homosexuality is an abomination to God and the word of God makes that very clear. But the bible says we are all sinners. “If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us” 1st John 1:8 (NKJV) However the issue is not about what is right and wrong about homosexuality or judging others but better ways of dealing with the whole thing from a Godly perspective without offending no one.
Homosexuals are the victims of this discrimination and unfair treatment going on in our society. It is the very same people who are preaching the love of God to the four corners of the earth who are showing hatred to homosexuals. These are God’s ambassadors, people who are suppose to represent God here on Earth and reveal His love to the lost. Yanga Meyiwa, who is a gay, said “I think more than anything Christians do not understand just like the rest of the society. They choose to be oblivious to the existence of homosexuals”. What seems kind of ironic is a fact that, in a religion based around a man who taught to love all and accept all, there are so many members that hate on homosexuals and do so in a way that really offends. The bible also makes it clear that there is no one who is without sin and no one is perfect or can be acknowledged as a good person. Only Jesus was without sin and He demonstrated it very well when He was dealing with the men who had accused a woman of adultery. In John 8 verse 7, “He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first”.
In the Church:
People go to church primarily for the revival for the soul, to get hope, to be encouraged, perhaps for direction in life and to worship the Creator. No one goes to church to receive a judgment of their sins and for condemnation, its only God who can bring a judgment to an individual because only He is perfect. Why should the church members give a gay person ‘that look’ while they shake hands with the thief? Do we not all belong to God? Christians have a certain mindset regarding homosexuals, they have categorized them as big sinners in the entire universe. “The American Psychological Association deplores all public and private discrimination in such areas as employment, housing, public accommodation, and licensing against those who engage in or have engaged in homosexual activities and declares that no burden of proof of such judgment, capacity, or reliability shall be placed upon these individuals greater than that imposed on any other persons”. (Conger, J.J. (1975). Proceedings of the American Psychological Association). Pastor Andrew Anderson of the Potters House thinks that the statement homosexuals make that Christians are judgmental towards them is inappropriate and they are using it as an excuse of not coming to church. “I think they are just using that as an excuse of not coming to our churches because we are not judging them” he said.
There is no doubt that some Christians do express this discrimination and hatred towards homosexuals, some even take it far too far and seem to have an obsession with homosexuality and this is not the nature of the God they serve. There might be several scriptures in the bible that condemns homosexuality, however the word of God does not suggest that they should discriminated and be treated unfairly.
Christians are commanded by God to love as they are loved unconditionally. The word of God state that you can’t say you love the One you don’t see but you hate the one you see. “Whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is he who does not love his brother. For this is the message that you heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.” 1 John 3: 10-11. This is the nature of God, He is true love and desires those He has chosen to demonstrate His love in the same way He did. Jesus preached the love of God to every nations, all of creation and the bible does not record any event where Jesus showed hatred to anyone, but mercy and love He revealed. Pastor Anderson also acknowledged that God loves homosexuals, in fact He loves everyone. “The bible says ‘For God so loves the world that He gave His only son’ so God loves people but this is not the issue of people this is the issue of sin” he added. Jesus gave His life for everyone, including gays, and as Christians we ought to love them as fellow humans and accept them as they are, especially when they come to our churches.
An international study has found that homosexuals are twice likely to have attempted suicide at some point in their lives. This study published in the international BioMed Central (BMC) journal of Psychiatry indicates that homosexuals were more prone to depression, substance abuse and suicidal behavior than heterosexuals as a result of discrimination and rejection. “The organization received numerous calls for help from the Indian community who don’t know how to cope with their homosexuality”. said Janine Shamos, spokesman for the South African Depression and Anxiety Group. So this basically shows that homosexuals are in vulnerability of such things. This is where the church is suppose to play the role of Jesus, which is reconciling men with God.
The purpose of this article is not to lambast Christians or glorify the homosexual lifestyle, however it is to help the brethren in Christ see this whole issue from another perspective and that of its complexity. We have to know that there are many reasons for this cause and dealing with these people is not easy. Our ignorance should be cast aside and we must put on the face of Jesus, how He would deal with the whole situation. Criticizing and judging is not going to help bring peace but would offend and drive the people of God away from the love of God.
