This is a response to Arthur Harding’s address to atheists and christians.
Here is the thing, this debate (and the insults following) will never stop. As long as there are Atheists and Christians, we will argue… I have a problem with religion, not just christianity.
If you don’t like the insults, hey don’t read them.
I will respect the religious and their faith:
Once they stop ramming their religion down people’s throats
Once I atheists are not seen as the antichrist when they mention that they don’t believe
Once religion is a choice (free of judgement and rejection) in schools
Once people stop using religion to commit crimes
Once “Christianity” isn’t a prerequisite for getting into a school or a job etc etc
This list can go on, but let’s make it simple… The main problem I have with religion, is when people use it as an excuse for some horrible crime. Molesting a young boy, because God told you so…. Bombing a whole building filled with innocent people because you will get rewarded in the after life… Beating somebody to death, because their religion is different than yours…
I used to be a Christian, but I came to realise that all of it is not true. We can debate about this, and you can insult my morals (which by the way are high and strong – just because I don’t believe in a God, does not mean I believe that one should murder, rape or steal. I help people where I can, and believe in being kind and compassionate).
To be honest it bothered me for a very long time, and I was ashamed about the fact that I “turned atheist”… but quite frankly, I don’t care anymore. Let me tell you the final straw that broke the camel’s back:
We invited our Pastor over for a braai, and I mentioned that I like my meat rare… very rare. My pastor told my husband - no, no, no, cook her meat thoroughly. One isn’t allowed to drink blood…
Now this might seem like a small, ridiculous thing to lose your religion over (and please spare me the – your faith was never strong enough. You were a bench warmer. You are going to burn in hell for all eternity – I’ve seen it, heard it, and yes I even have the T-shirt : I AM AN ATHEIST, I WILL BURN IN HELL) but that was exactly it – it was absolutely ridiculous… Am I going to hell because I like a piece of rare steak? Am I going to hell because I drink alcohol?
The religious say don’t judge (or Christians do) but you are “measured” or “compared” to other Christians. You are judged by your willingness to do certain things, based on your strength in your belief. “I don’t smoke, so I am a better Christian than Suzy, and her faith isn’t strong enough, because if you TRULY believe, God can make you quit!”
It’s just all ridiculous. No let me get back to my blood drinking, baby eating and goat sacrificing… Or whatever it is we atheists do on Thursdays..
