Review and repal laws to end Aids!

09 June 2014, 07:26
Evidence points out that the law is creating barriers towards achieving the target of the 3 zeros Zero new infections, Zero discrimination, and Zero HIV/AIDS related deaths. Criminalisation of same sex behaviours amonsgt consenting adults, preffred gender identities, and choice of occupation hinders progress on interverntions towards ending AIDS.
Sex workers are arrested for having condoms on them and this being used as eveidence that one is indeed a sex worker, this discourages these men and women from carrying condoms on them therefore increasing their chances of practising unsafe sex,and where corrective rape takes place these individuals are not able report and seek services that could prevent them from aquiring HIV because their sexual orientation is crminalised.
Not reaching all key populations achieving the goal of Zero new infections, Zero discrimination and Zero AIDS related deaths remains just a dream. In conclusion we now now that what we have had for the past 32 years since the first diagnosis is not working. The time for change has come and is now! These laws need to repealed to create enabling environments for these groups to be able to realize their basic health and human rights, including HIV related services without the fear of being discriminated against. By removing laws that reduces these groups' access to health and justice services, we would've taken a step towards achieving the goal of eliminating HIV/AIDS.
